Big Night For Fight Against Malaria Idol Gives Back David Archuleta or David Cook? It's an important question that has undoubtedly stirred many a debate. One thing about American Idol that is not debatable though is their steadfast effort to help end Malaria. Malaria is the number one killer of children under 5 in Africa, killing one child every 30 seconds, and taking over 1 million lives a year. During theIdol Gives Backevent,American Idol'scharity special, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged 20 million bednets to fight Malaria in Africa. It's no suprise that the candidates have to be vocal about all issues that concern the role of the US Government and given the global agenda President Bush has been pursuing (highlighting of course 2005's Presidents Malaria Initiative) the candidiates need to let the public know what their intentions are in regards to this huge financial investment. Here's what they have to say:
Senator Obama: "I have called for doubling our foreign assistance to $50 billion by 2012 to address the threat of deadly diseases like malaria along with other important issues such as global poverty, tyranny, terrorism, and proliferation of deadly weapons. I have also called for combined funding of $1.65 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in the FY2009 appropriations bills.

Rwanda & Ethiopia:
With mass distribution of mosquito nets and access to powerful new medicines, malaria cases in Rwanda and Ethiopia declined by more than half, according to the January 2008 World Health Organization report. In Rwanda, malaria deaths dropped a stunning 66% and incidence fell 64% within six months of these interventions. In Ethiopia, malaria deaths dropped 51% and incidence dropped 60% within two years.
