In the Field: Making Sure Kids are Covered
In 2008 and 2009, Malaria No More will fund the distribution of 267,000 mosquito nets in Tanzania as part of a 7.2 million net nationwide campaign.
Together with partners the Global Fund, the World Bank, the President's Malaria Initiative, Mennonite Economic Development Associates, World Vision and UNICEF, along with the Tanzania National Malaria Control Program, we will reach 100% coverage of children under five by the end of 2009.
In addition, Malaria No More raised $1.7 million through a matching campaign with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. This money fueled a program to re-treat mosquito nets in two regions of Tanzania with the long-lasting insecticides that keep them effective.
This net retreatment campaign complements the simultaneous 7.2 million mosquito net distribution and will increase the percentage of children sleeping under treated mosquito nets in Mtwara and Lindi regions to 80% by the end of 2008.

Saving the World in Study Hall

In keeping with thousands of years of tradition, I should be wringing my hands about adolescents these days, so lazy and degenerate compared with my own upstanding generation. But when I see high school students working energetically to save the lives of people half a world away, before they are even allowed to buy a beer, I’m reduced to mumbling admiration. These kids are truly inspiring.
As a 16-year-old in Melbourne, Fla.,Allyson Brownorganized a Valentine’s dance at her high school, with the proceeds going to fight malaria in Africa. That dance grew intoStayin’ Alive, a campaign that has attracted more than 100schools in 31 states to raise money to buy mosquito bed nets that cost $10 each and protect a family from malaria.

President Bush awards Stayin' Alive Founder Allyson Brown!

President Bush handed out 3 Dragonfly Awards on April 25th (an award so termed because dragonflies are a mosquitos natural predator) and our very own Allyson Brown from Florida received one.
President Bush said, "Allyson came up with an innovative way to combine two of her passions: one, fighting malaria in Africa, and school dances. She put together a fundraising dance with the theme "Staying Alive," and came away with more than $1,600 in donations. Then she built upon her success by working with Malaria No More to start a nationwide "Staying Alive" campaign. So far, more than 100 schools in 30 states have joined. Together they've raised more than $30,000 to purchase bed nets"
Go Allyson!

Chamillionaire Gives Props to Activist Students

This in from MTV News producer Garth Bardsley, on a shoot in the Lone Star State:
We’re in southwestern Houston at a public high school called YES Prep, which is a free high school catering to low-income students, and -get this -it has a100% acceptance rate to college.
On April 18th, the students held a dance on behalf of an organization called Malaria No More, raising money to purchase nets to protect against mosquitoes in Africa. So Houston’s own Chamillionaire swung by to fire up the students and give them props for their hard work.
