Mission Statement
The Appalachian Media Institute (AMI), Appalshop’s youth media training program, is based in the coalfields of eastern Kentucky. Since Appalshop’s beginning in 1969 as a federal “War on Poverty” program to train disadvantaged youth in media production, it has created the largest single body of work extant about Appalachia in each of its major disciplines: theater, film, youth media and community radio. AMI focuses on building youth capacity to author change by developing leaders who are action-researchers for their communities and the central Appalachian region. Working alongside Appalshop’s veteran adult media producers and community workers AMI youth produce video and radio documentaries that explore issues critical to their communities.
