The following is based on a transcript from "D.L. Hughley Breaks the News" and is what i think a great conversation on Prop 8 and gay marriage...
(CNN) -- More than a week after voters in California, Arizona and Florida passed ballot initiatives outlawing same-sex marriage, thousands of people across the country protested the bans in simultaneous rallies Saturday.
In California, Proposition 8 overturned a May ruling by the California Supreme Court that struck down a 2000 ban on same-sex unions. It passed 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent.
CNN's D.L. Hughley spoke to sex columnist Dan Savage about the ongoing battle to legalize same-sex marriage in California. Savage is the author of the popular syndicated sex advice column "Savage Love."

Why do men cheat? |

I thought this was an interesting op-ed in light of all the cheating scandals in politics and overall infidelity that seems to exist in our society... Why men like John Edwards cheat Aug. 10, 2008 Shmuley Boteach , THE JERUSALEM POSTThe outrage over John Edward's admitted affair with a filmmaker transcends what we have seen with most recent sex scandals. This partly results from his repeated denials of the affair. Much more important, of course, is the fact that it took place while his wife was battling cancer. The two of them had already dealt with the tragedy of losing a teenage son, and the public is furious that Edwards caused his wife, who agreed to campaign for him even after being diagnosed with incurable bone cancer, more pain. ...

Ski and Be Green |

Im off to hit the ski slopes this weekend, so I thought it would be appropriate to share some info on what the ski industry is trying to do to protect the environment. Thankfully, many of the outdoor sports athletes appreciate their dependency on their environment for their livlihood so they do make efforts to treat it well. Climate change poses a significant threat to skiers as many mountains they have skied on in the past are not getting as much, or any, snow, or the seasons are getting shorter. Check out this video on the 2008 Winter X Games and what they are doing:

Reducing Emissions does NOT hurt the economy |

For so long the companies who are polluting our planet have lobbied that all this "going green" talk would hurt our economy. I think we all know the reality is it would hurt their polluting business, but a new study released today shows that a $29 billion profit could be made by the global economy if we were only to do the easiest and most cost effiecient changes to be green right now. Additionally, it would put us well on our way down the path of lowering the carbon output into the atmostphere as defined by the goals set forth by the IPCC. The study was also conducted by the most respected consulting firm in the world, McKinsey, so I would love to hear what the critics have to say now! Check it out:

Spielberg pulls out of Olympics
Move marks public relations blow to China
By TED JOHNSON
Steven Spielberg has decided not to participate in this summer's Beijing Olympic Games as an artistic adviser, citing China's lack of progress in resolving the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.
His move is a public relations blow to the Chinese government, which is under pressure to force the government of Sudan to resolve the crisis in Darfur.
Spielberg's worldwide profile could lead others involved in the Games to pull out and even lead sponsors to reconsider their roles in the event.
As the biggest customer for Sudan's oil, China has been the target of Darfur advocates for the better part of a year, much to the dismay of Chinese officials who have complained that the Games were being politicized.

Factcheck.org is a great non-partison organization that analyzes information that comes from candidates and politicians to find out the validity of their statements. They just launched a great video webcast that hits some of the major truths and lies spread in the past week on the campaign trail. Here is a recent video:

I Think Biofuels are a Hoax! |

I have (along with many others) been claiming for a while that biofuels are a hoax. While burning them does emit less CO2 into the atmosphere than oil, the environmental impact of the production and transportation of such fuels far outweighs their benefit. A new report today in Science now confirms this fact and was reported in the NY Times:
Biofuels Deemed a Greenhouse Threat
By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL
Almost all biofuels used today cause more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels if the full emissions costs of producing these “green” fuels are taken into account, two studies being published Thursday have concluded.
The benefits of biofuels have come under increasing attack in recent months, as scientists took a closer look at the global environmental cost of their production. These latest studies, published in the prestigious journal Science, are likely to add to the controversy.

Meat = Worse than cars |

Eating meat is my vice in my quest to be green. Most people dont realize it but the resources used and emissions resulting from meat consumption make it one of the most (if not the most) harmful activities for the environment that we take part in. I had a very Irish/meat and potatoes upbringing so its been hard for me to reduce my meat consumption. I feel at times its like asking Britney to lay off the crazy...at the end of the day its just not gonna happen! I have been doing my best to reduce my consumption which is certainly a step in the right direction, but I must admit that articles like this make me want to head to the veggie drawer and not the George Foreman at night:
