In what is easily one of the most significant developments for Massachusetts youth in over a decade, Governor Deval Patrick just released an ambitious plan to overhaul the way Massachusetts educates its residents. There is a lot in the report to discuss, most of which cannot be addressed in a single blog post.
With a plan that looks over a decade into the future, this report is obviously just the beginning of a conversation on how best to educate Massachusetts residents in the new millenium. Those looking to educate themselves should start by reading the report. The Readiness Project Action Agenda can be found here.

Picture: Gov. Deval Patrick celebrates the defeat of the proposal to ban marriage equality in Massachusetts (14 June 2007)
Katherine Patrick, the daughter of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, is a courageous youth. In the last year she has come out as a lesbian to her friends and family, and last week she came out to the whole world. 18-year-old Katherine Patrick did a sit down interview withBay Windows, "New England's largest GLBT newspaper", to make the announcement, and the news has since been written about by theBoston Herald, theBoston Globe, theAssociated Press, and countless other news outlets that reach across the globe.
As a straight white male, I will always acknowledge that the privileged lens through which I view the world does not make me the best person to speak on issues like this, but I'm going to try, and people are free to weigh in through comments.

Matchstick thin limbs, swollen bellies, sunken eyes, buzzing flies, if you know what I'm talking about, chances are you are familiar withdevelopment pornography. It's a term critics use for some of the shocking images aid organizations exploit to encourage donations. These are images usually taken by"first world", white, photographersto portray "third world" problems. In fact, chances are these are the first images that pop up in your mind when you think of the entire continent of Africa.

The media has never gotten the migrant struggle right. But even I was surprised by the ineptitude of local Massachusetts media and their coverage of May Day. Not only was their portrayal inaccurate and skewed, they covered the wrong demonstration. Last week, the voices of migrants and their allies were not heard in Massachusetts.
I never expected to get the real story of May 1, 2008 in newspapers, the radio, on TV, or even through most new media. I knew the only way I was going to get the real story was by marching myself. I have a history with May Day. For myself, May 1, 2006 was like a coming of age. It was the culmination of a trip in which I had almost lost my life trying to retrace the route of a Guatemalan migrant into the U.S. From then on, I was reborn as a journalist and a migrant advocate. So in 2008 I marched again. This time, alongside Massachusetts migrant youth.

I've interviewed a lot of youth over these last few months and I thought I'd see where the stand on the race between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. It turns out they were split exactly down the middle.

While the media circus surrounding Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton spirals into insanity, it seems as if at least one former contender, with the help of his wife, is trying to keep the focus squarely on the issues that matter. Senator John Edwards was the keynote speaker for the three day Millennium Campus Conference, sponsored by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Global Poverty Initiative.
Alison King of New England Cable News (NECN) reports on Senator Edward's efforts in the following video:
In traditional mainstream media fashion, Alison King focuses more on the Democrat rat race than on the issues that matter. The few times Edwards' anti-poverty message does get through it's paraphrased through her words.

In the beginning of April, I was able to run into Massachusetts Senator John Kerry in between events and catch reporters as they asked him questions about the race between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. I'm starting to learn that's one of the best times to ask politicians unscripted questions and get real answers.
