Last week I talked to the Vice President of Young Democrats at the University of Oklahoma, Sam Ikard. He gave us his opinion on who he thought Barack Obama would pick for his Vice President, and when Obama would make the VP announcement. We still have not heard from either side who they will choose.
This week I talked to another “Vice,” not a vice president, but a vice chair of the College Republicans at the University of Oklahoma.
Like Sam, Stephen Nehrenz has been keeping up with national politics over the summer. Stephen is a sophomore at OU, he was elected to be one of two vice chairs during last spring semester. He said is very excited to see who John McCain will pick for his running mate.
“To be honest, I am not entirely sure who would be a great...

Just about everybody has begun specualting who Barack Obama and John McCain will choose to be their running mates. The candidate list includes all kinds of politicians from governors to former presidential candidates.
Sam Ikard, a junior at the University of Oklahoma, is a Vice President himself. Last semester he was elected VP of OU’s Young Democrats chapter. Sam is a Political Science major and says that he is always keeping track of national politics.
“I think McCain and Obama will announce very soon. McCain, especially, should announce in the next week or two. The Olympics begin on August 8th and run all the way up to the Democratic National Convention. So if he wants to grab media, he needs to do it before the Olympics become the main focus on television. Obama needs to announce relatively soon since...

Summer is a time to kick back and relax for most college students. Nevertheless, some students are spending their free time this summer helping with local campaigns. Whether they are getting paid, getting class credit, or just volunteering, I found three students who don’t regret spending the summer in the political world.
Tessa Breder is a student at the University of Oklahoma, and she has been very involved with the College Republican group on campus. Her involvement with College Republicans helped her get a position with Aaron Stiles’ campaign for State Senate. Tessa said that Stiles got her name from a former College Republican chairman. Tessa and Stiles talked politics over breakfast one day and she decided to be his Director of Logistics for the summer...

The youth voter turnout has tripled in some states this year. More young people than ever have taken an interest in politics. However, I’ve heard rumblings of some young voters becoming bored with national election coverage. Is this boredom trend something candidates should address or will the voting numbers still climb higher?
Nearly a year before the first Presidential primary, the 2008 election was headline news. Candidate debates started earlier than ever and some experimented with unique formats, including soliciting questions from You Tube viewers. There has been so much media coverage since the spring of ‘07 that some young voters have already grown tired of the campaigns even as the two presumptive nominees have finally been determined.
After having witnessed eight Democratic and eleven Republican candidates race for the finish, some say it was too much too soon...

Tyler Douse, 22, found his calling at Oklahoma Baptist University, OBU, in Shawnee, OK. Tyler just graduated in May with a degree in Political Science. “Over my four years of college, I started to see the role politics play in our everyday lives,” Tyler said. “And how significant politics really are.” Although Tyler says he doesn’t know why he decided to study Political Science, he now feels like he is a part of history. During his last year of college, Tyler got the opportunity to intern at Barack Obama’s Senate office in Washington D.C. From August 2007 to January 2008, Tyler helped with Obama’s campaign. He got to be a part of the beginning of the Countdown to Change Rallies and also went ...

The past weekend was very exciting for everyone following the Presidential campaign. Senator Obama is now the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party. Plus, Senator Clinton has pledged her support to Obama. It now seems like everyone is buzzing about the big day in November. College organizations are getting ready to spark up debates on campus, and get young people registered to vote. The College Republicans and Young Democrats at the University of Oklahoma are planning a week long campaign called Politics Week to get students exciting about voting. “Besides volunteering for the party or for campaigns, our largest task this summer is planning for the year ahead,” Tessa Breder, Chair of OU College republicans said. “The hard part is convincing students to take that first step and that’s really what we ...
