What's New

In 2008, iEARN enters its 20th year of connecting students and classes worldwide to enable them to work on collaborative projects. From just two countries (US and USSR--remember that?) in 1988, iEARN now has programs in 125 countries!!! So, an educator or after school program leader can instantly connect young people with others around the world to talk about the environment, human rights, economic issues, cultural differences, or to just make international friends. They then work on these global issues in both an international and local context to improve the quality of life on the planet and in their community. A description of these projects can be found at http://media.iearn.org/projects One of our newest projects is the "(OF2) -- Our Footprints, Our Future." It enables students anywhere in the world to measure the amount of carbon dioxide they and their families are emitting through their current lifestyle and then make personal and collective goals to life differently so that they can play a positive role in climate change.

CALLING ALL INNOVATORS! DIGITAL MEDIA COMPETITION IS OPEN!

Given your organization's mission, I wanted to make sure you were aware of the 2008 $2M HASTAC/MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition. (http://www.dmlcompetition.net , deadline October 15th) The theme of this year's Competition is participatory learning which we broadly define as using new digital media for sharing ideas or planning, designing, implementing, or just discussing ideas and goals together.

I'm sure your youth supporters/audience have a big idea on how to use digital media to make a positive change in the world and further learning and collaboration. We want to hear their ideas! Our Young Innovators award is targeted to U.S. applicants aged 18-25. We want to help them get their ideas from the "garage" to implementation.

I hope those of you that have those big ideas cooking will consider applying!

I've posted the full rfp below, but you can also check out the full details at http://www.dmlcompetition.net.

And follow us on Twitter @ http://twitter.com/dmlComp

You can email me at mandy.dailey@duke.edu with questions.

Best,
Mandy
