My Inauguration Story

So many people told us we were crazy to go to Obama’s inauguration. Don’t get me wrong there were valid reasons. It would be crowded (which would turn out to be an understatement), unthinkably cold, uncomfortable, no where to park, jam packed highways and that’s if we even made it there. Like so many I had a strong urge to be there. To see with my own two eyes the first Black President.

I heard amongst the crowd, they just wanted to be there. It didn’t matter that it felt like 17 degrees or that there was no where to sit and few places to keep warm; there was something powerful about being in the mi...

Watch Party Blog

Following this campaign has been an roller coaster ride from rainy streets with Obama supporters canvassing Richmond, to polling places, to now a watch party. I must admit this is the most I've ever been involved in the election process. I thik that's true for a lot of young people. I usally vote go about  my day and watch coverage at home and go mourn or celebrate in private. So it's so humbliing to be on the ground floor watching and being a part of this election. I usally vote, go I spoke with young voters today voting for the first time. You could feel the pride and joy they felt from being able to pratice their patrotic duty. Personally I felt goosebumps casting my vote. We've been waiting for this moment for almost 2 years and emotions are running high all over Virginia.

President Clinton Rallies For Obama

President Clinton Rallies for Obama Part I

Now I must admit something. I am easily amused, so when a celebrity let alone a politician come to Virginia I am more than excited. That being said I was in no way prepared for the huge turnout for President Bill Clinton.  It was borderline rock and roll concert status. I heard two girls behind me say, “This is like a packed club on Saturday night, except there is no alcohol.” We I arrived to the Virginia Commonwealth University Commons Plaza hundreds of people were waiting anxiously for President Clinton’s speech. Since he was scheduled to appear at 9:30 p.m. and it was now 7:30 p.m. I was a little anxious to say the least.

The Politics of Celebrity

Politics of Celebrity

What happens when you drop three celebrities onto a college campus? Students hurry to wherever they are to rub elbows with celebrities. If only for a moment they feel close to Hollywood. Some Virginia colleges got a special treat this week as actresses Tatyana Ali, Jurnee Smollet, and comedian Marlon Wayans toured campuses in the Richmond community to talk politics. Obama politics! I can’t deny I was excited to see the celebrities drop by, but I was worried that students would get caught up in their celebrity and not hear the message. Obama’s opponents have attacked his celebrity status on several occasions.  The idea that Obama’s celebrity status gets in the way of his effectiveness to bring about change.  Marlon said in response...

Obama's Big Night

Obama’s Big Night                   I watched the Democratic National Convention at my alma mater Virginia Commonwealth University. A student organization called ‘Students for Obama’ hosted a viewing party in the student commons. The turnout was amazing. The room only allowed 150 students, but students were standing on in the hallway and sitting on the floor to take a peak at this historic night. The energy that night was electric; students clapped, laughed, and listened intently as Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president.                 The excitement in the room that night was inspiring, a true testament to the renewed interest in politics among young voters. After the speech I talked with students to get their reaction and almost all of them sp...

VA Delegate: Bringing Power Back to the People

Giving Power Back to the People

I met Kate Maxwell at the Carytown Watermelon Festival earlier this month. The Watermelon Festival is an event in Richmond where vendors line the streets of Carytown and we all celebrate you guessed it watermelon. But, Maxwell wasn’t there just enjoying the festivities. I found her passing out stickers and banners in support of the Republican Party.  This all seems to come natural to her. As a child Maxwell’s parents were very involved in politics and she often found herself at several Republican volunteer events. In the footsteps of her parents, Maxwell ran as an At Large delegate. She was elected by the Republican Party of Virginia State Conventions. A self proclaimed history nerd and lover of politics Maxwell is more about participating in the convention.

Feeling the Pinch: Gas Prices in Virginia

There are some things that college just doesn’t prepare you for. Last year, I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. I learned several valuable tools for navigating the broadcast world and I’ve enjoyed an array of diverse and challenging experiences. I managed to work three jobs to pay for school and go to school full time. Even these experiences could not have prepared me for our current economic situation. I read the headlines about the state of the economy, rising gas costs, home foreclosures, and unemployment, but it t all seemed like a distant stranger lurking in the dark, one that couldn’t possibly affect me. Here I am two years later struggling with the rising cost of gas and energy cost.                 Across the country rising gas...

Introduction

My name is Lauren Compton. I am very excited about joining the 2008 MTV Choose or Lose Street Team. Before, this election politics seemed distant for me, a process I couldn't fully particpate in or understand. For the first time I am excited and charged about this year's election. What's different? For one I feel politicians on both side are having open dialogue on issues that include everyone, especially young people. I am eager to begin reporting on the politicial and social issues that are important to Virginia's youth. Fellow Street Team reporter Sabina has lead the way in reporting on issues important in Virginia I hope to continue her hard work.
