Dress Up and Support Your Candidate

My presidential candidates are not only running for president, but they are also in a marketable war against one another. Their faces are smeared on soda bottles, coffee mugs, and t-shirts, and it seems like people my age (23) are buying up everything they can.    It seems this presidential race is a race indeed. It is a sporting event where people dress up and support their candidate.

How Loud is Too Loud?

Outdoor entertainment in Richmond, Kentucky is on the brink of extinction since a new noise ordinance is on the table.   Richmond is the home of Eastern Kentucky University, a college town with a hint of night life.

So far, city leaders have temporarily put a noise ordinance on the docket. The plan being considered would stop outdoor entertainment at 10pm every night, if it is loud enough to be heard inside a home. Concerts, stand-up comedy, and recorded music would be affected.

Jenny Jenkins, a soon-to-be junior at EKU thinks the noise ordinance is a joke. She says, “Who is going to be the one to say that the music is too loud? Is it going to be the old man who lives next door who decides if the music in my backyard is a touch too loud?”

Great Questions, Vague Answers

What does “going green” actually mean? Does it mean taking the time, or the effort to do something “environmentally friendly”? Or does it require a lifestyle change? According to a top NASA scientist, “we’re toast” if we don’t make some big changes… and soon. According to the Associated Press, James Hansen says the world’s only hope in preventing global working is to take some big steps towards going green.  Hansen says that the world is at “a dangerous level” for greenhouse gas emissions and we need to get back to the levels from 1988.  While discussing this with some coworkers and friends, they had a hard time believing that 20 years could do so much damage. How could Earth be in the red-zone in 2008, and be safe in 1988? What are we doing now that we didn’t do before? Hansen says the Earth’s atmosphere can only hold so much carbon dioxide for so long. He says if nothing changes in ...

Tainted Tomatoes Make UK Students More Health Conscious

The wait is almost over. Tomatoes are making a comeback!     Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, A&W and Long John Silver say they are reintroducing the tomato back into their foods. These restaurant chains are apart of Yum Brands, which is based out of Louisville , Kentucky . None of these restaurants have been connected with any of the salmonella cases. Kentucky was recently included among the 28 states that reported salmonella cases from eating these tainted red gems. Officials say that the outbreak of bad tomatoes has now sickened 277 people nationwide. So far, the companies behind some restaurant chains have begun to restock tomatoes after the government has identified crops that have not been linked to the salmonella scare.    Burger King, which also briefly stopped using tomatoes, has begun to restock its restaurants as of last week. However, McDonald’s is holding off on reissuing the ...

Drinking this Summer Could Send Parents to Jail
Posted  on June 05, 2008 at 2:24 PM

A lot of high schools have already had their graduation ceremonies across the country this week.  High school graduation is a transition into adulthood, but does this include alcohol?

Kentucky has adopted some tougher underage drinking laws, and they aren't just aimed at the offenders. Parents are being targeted too.

It's called the "social host ordinance".  Parents who allow underage boozing on their property could now land themselves in jail.  Lexington Fayette and Urban County Government is currently discussing this ordinance to cut down on the amount of underage drinking in the state.

Who is This Guy?

If you’re sick of the media frenzy that surrounds Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and if you think John McCain is Bush’s protégé, you have another presidential hopeful. Many people will neither commit to being totally left wing, or radically right winged either.  These people who want to uphold the constitution call themselves Libertarians. So who is your new leader?  It’s this guy:

So who is he?  I carried around a photo of this man around Lexington, Kentucky with me to the grocery store. 22-year-old Karl Wade, a junior at the University of Kentuckythought he was the governor of Kentucky. 19-year ...
