Why I’m Here
Shakira's wonderful speech has made me even more convinced that it is necessary for us to take action against the injustice and poverty in the world, especially in South America. Where I live, in Belgium, South America is a region that is barely mentioned when it comes to injustice, poverty, displacement, etc. even though it is a region in about as much need as Africa. That is not all - I feel that our world is becoming more and more selfish and oriented at personal gain, despite of whom becomes the victim. This can be felt in great examples of social injustice, such as in Colombia and other countries, but also in daily life. In traffic, for example, it is daily business to get cut off, to see people speeding and disregarding safety rules, all to get home a little bit earlier. People are killing each other solely because of their skin colour or heritage, and even within my own country politicians cannot see eye to eye. There HAS to be a change if we want to survive as the human race, and I feel the time has come for us, young people to be the 'architects of change'!
