Mission Statement

The mission of YouthBuild USA is to unleash the intelligence and positive energy of low-income youth to rebuild their communities and their lives.

YouthBuild USA seeks to join with others to help build a movement toward a more just society in which respect, love, responsibility, and cooperation are the dominant unifying values, and sufficient opportunities are available for all people in all communities to fulfill their own potential and contribute to the well-being of others.

What is YouthBuild?

YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that addresses core issues facing low-income communities: housing, education, employment, crime prevention and leadership development. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16-24 work toward their GED or high school diploma while learning job skills by building affordable housing for homeless and low-income people. A strong emphasis is placed on community service and leadership development.

Since 1994, more than 76,000 YouthBuild students have produced 17,000 units of low-income housing. Today, there are 226 YouthBuild programs in 43 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, engaging approximately 8,000 young adults each year.

YouthBuild's Our America

On April 1, 2008...

YouthBuild and think.mtv.com held an unprecedented gathering of 500 youth in our nation's capital, joined by more than 40 national youth organizations. Defying the stereotype of apathy among low-income youth, this powerful town hall event featured the compelling testimonies of politically active youth who have risen above the challenges of poverty. Surprise appearances by Sen. John Kerry and the Rev. Jesse Jackson set the tone for an evening of excitement and enthusiasm for making a difference. YouthBuild graduates presented the Declaration of Inter-Dependence as their peers cheered on their policy recommendations in education, family support, community economic development, respect for young people, the justice system and the environment.

Join the Our America group to continue the movement online and look out for videos, pictures blogs and more interactive discussions coming to highlight this important moment.

I'm still thinking about the power of the young people who raised their voices to talk about education, community healing, poverty, violence and drugs, excessive imprisonment, caring for the planet, and fighting for opportunity for all at the Our America town hall and the YouthBuild Conference of Young Leaders. Keep talking and working to fix things! We need everyone! Be sure to vote and to work in our communities! Dorothy
