We the youth have heard it before. “Young people should be involved in the election.” “It’s your future.” “You have a voice.” Of course we’ve always had a voice – but what’s making young people shout so loudly now?
For the first time ever, Delaware witnessed over 600,000 people register to vote in the general election – many of these young and first-time voters. More young people are voting, but youth participation goes far beyond pulling levers – to actually pushing people’s buttons.

Delaware Students BaRock the Vote like Rocky in Philly |

Delaware may be the First State, but for the University of Delaware College Democrats and other active students trying to get out the vote - it's not the first priority. This morning nearly 200 College Democrats marched up to Philadelphia, PA to campaign for Barack - like Balboa running up the steps of the Art Museum. As part of a college to college initiative, UD Dems will try to convince their neighboring students at Drexel and Temple Universities to bring a big win for Barack.
In contrast, very little is going on at the Newark University of Delaware campus. Two nearby polling places, Newark High School and the Newark Public Library, have each seen about 300 votes cast today. Although some students came out to vote - more might be chilled by the rain and the true "Blue" nature of the state.

Phillies Phans React to Obama’s 30-Minute Infomercial and Its Effect on the World Series
As Philadelphia waited for the first ball to cross the plate in Game 5 of the World Series – Barack Obama made his last pitch for the Presidency. The Democratic presidential candidate launched a 30-minute campaign advertisement Wednesday night in which he paralleled his plans for the presidency with profiles of people in America. The costly commercial, which set the Obama campaign back over $3 million, detailed Obama’s policies on healthcare, education, energy, and the all-important economy. Although the ad was heralded by many as a huge success, some political pundits saw Obama’s last bid for ...

Students on Main Street at the University of Delaware are Feeling the Cold Winds From Wall Street – But Which Presidential Candidate Will Be Their Umbrella?
This Wednesday, John McCain and Barack Obama threw some punches as they debated the failing economy in the last presidential debate of 2008 – but it was Wall Street itself that walked away with a black eye. On October 15, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 733 points – the 2nd largest one-day point loss ever in U.S. history. As if that shiner weren’t black enough, The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index slipped 9% - the worst single-day percentage loss since Black Monday of 1987. ...

While Delaware Celebrates Joe Biden as Obama’s #2, Some Think the Senator is Running 1 Race 2 Many
On August 23, Senator Joe Biden won the coveted role as Barack Obama’s vice presidential nominee…and Delawareans lost their minds. It was the first time in history a major political party had nominated a Delawarean for a vice presidential campaign – and Delaware was more than abuzz about Biden.
“People in Delaware and at U of D are much more interested in the election now, because [Biden’s] nomination hits so close to home.” Erica Auguilar, a 19-year-old University of Delaware studen...

Delaware Hosts Its First Ever Gubernatorial Debate on Latino and Hispanic Issues – And Young Hispanics Are the First to Take Notice
This Wednesday, Delaware witnessed the first gubernatorial debate in the state’s history to focus solely on Latino and Hispanic issues. Governor hopefuls Lieutenant Governor John Carney, State Treasurer Jack Markell, and Hockessin pilot Mike Protack met at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino to address the concerns of the Delaware latino community – including immigration, discrimination, and all-important education. Although the debate was held in a casino – the real prize was meeting the young gems of the latino community.

President Bush and Delaware Are Each Hitting the Beach for Energy Needs – But For Very Different Reasons
What do Delaware and President Bush have in common? And no, it’s not that The Simpsons has made each into a walking punch line. Both the First State and the First in Command are seeking offshore solutions to the nation’s energy crisis. However, what they each see as offshore energy opportunities could not be more different. While Bush is looking below the waves to drill untapped oil reserves – Delaware is looking forward to housing the first offshore wind farm in the country.
On Monday President Bush lifted an executive ban on producing oil from the outer continental shelf (OCS) – a mandate left unchallenged since the President’s father, George Bush Sr., gave the executive order in 1990.

On a muggy Tuesday afternoon, I sat in the living room of a picturesque townhouse that looked like it would be more suited for the set of The Truman Show than the Baltimore suburbs. I came to speak with Kate Norley, a 25-year-old student at George Washington University. Kate is an All-American ensemble of matching twinsets – pale yellow sweater to match her long blond hair, sharp white smile to match her cutting wit. Kate shuffled through a stack of pictures from her time abroad, and smiled when she came to one particularly memorable picture. It is of her and her colleague fishing on the dock of a lake, grinning broadly after they each pulled in a particularly impressive catch. However, Kate wasn’t studying abroad when this picture was taken – she was serving part of a 16-month tour in Iraq from 2003 to 2005. And this wasn’t any ordinary...

Delaware May Be a Bastion for Barack, But McCain Might Get the Cold Shoulder On June 3, the day of the Montana and South Dakota primaries and the last leg of the 2008 presidential primaries, Barack Obama took to the future stage of the Republican National Convention and announced his conquest of the democratic nomination. At the Dead Presidents pub in Wilmington, Delaware – enthusiasm for Obama for President was very much alive. On the other hand, finding a McCain supporter was like finding meaning in a Paris Hilton horror movie. Wade Harvey of New Castle, Delaware, was one of those energized by Sen. Obama’s speech. “I am definitely an Obama advocate. I support him 100%. This is a revolutionary time, and I think it’s going to be a positive thing for the nation to have not only a minority, but also a very forward-thinking person as their nominee.” “Barack will be good for the nation because people trust him...

Some Women May Fly the Democratic Coop if Hillary Isn’t on the Ballot, But Obama’s Got All the Chicks On Saturday, June 7, Hillary Clinton conceded her campaign for the American presidency, and a historic campaign for women breathed its last death rattle. Many of Clinton’s female supporters bid farewell to a strong candidate – and for some possibly their last chance at saluting a woman Commander-in-Chief in their lifetime. “They really gave her the shaft, didn’t they?” Dorothy, a 77-year-old Wilmington resident and lifelong Democrat activist, was more than just disappointed that Hillary would not be Madame President. “I am extremely saddened with the results of this primary season. I’ve always liked and respected Hillary Clinton, and wouldn’t even know where to start as to why I support her. Back when she was First Lady, she stood by her man Bill amid all the scandal and crisis. I ...
