VIDEO: Studying Abroad: Lessons Learned in Iraq

On a muggy Tuesday afternoon, I sat in the living room of a picturesque townhouse that looked like it would be more suited for the set of The Truman Show than the Baltimore suburbs. I came to speak with Kate Norley, a 25-year-old student at George Washington University. Kate is an All-American ensemble of matching twinsets pale yellow sweater to match her long blond hair, sharp white smile to match her cutting wit. Kate shuffled through a stack of pictures from her time abroad, and smiled when she came to one particularly memorable picture. It is of her and her colleague fishing on the dock of a lake, grinning broadly after they each pulled in a particularly impressive catch. However, Kate wasn’t studying abroad when this picture was taken she was serving part of a 16-month tour in Iraq from 2003 to 2005. And this wasn’t any ordinary...

Delaware May Be a Bastion for Barack, But McCain Might Get the

Cold Shoulder

On June 3, the day of the Montana and South Dakota primaries and the last leg of the 2008 presidential primaries, Barack Obama took to the future stage of the Republican National Convention and announced his conquest of the democratic nomination. At the Dead Presidents pub in Wilmington, Delaware enthusiasm for Obama for President was very much alive. On the other hand, finding a McCain supporter was like finding meaning in a Paris Hilton horror movie. Wade Harvey of New Castle, Delaware, was one of those energized by Sen. Obama’s speech. “I am definitely an Obama advocate. I support him 100%. This is a revolutionary time, and I think it’s going to be a positive thing for the nation to have not only a minority, but also a very forward-thinking person as their nominee.” “Barack will be good for the nation because people trust him...

Some Women May Fly the Democratic Coop if Hillary Isn’t on the Ballot, But Obama’s Got All the Chicks

On Saturday, June 7, Hillary Clinton conceded her campaign for the American presidency, and a historic campaign for women breathed its last death rattle. Many of Clinton’s female supporters bid farewell to a strong candidate and for some possibly their last chance at saluting a woman Commander-in-Chief in their lifetime. “They really gave her the shaft, didn’t they?” Dorothy, a 77-year-old Wilmington resident and lifelong Democrat activist, was more than just disappointed that Hillary would not be Madame President. “I am extremely saddened with the results of this primary season. I’ve always liked and respected Hillary Clinton, and wouldn’t even know where to start as to why I support her. Back when she was First Lady, she stood by her man Bill amid all the scandal and crisis. I ...

An Op-Ed on the Dunkin Donuts/Rachael Ray Keffiyeh Kontroversy, and the Importance of Symbolism in America

E.V.O...OMG. It’s a strange day in America when radiant Rachael Ray, the lowest common denominator in middle-class food entertainment, is accused of having terrorist sympathies.

Dunkin’ Donuts, the self-proclaimed largest coffee and baked goods chain in the world, has reportedly pulled an advertisement because their spokesperson Rachael Ray was wearing what was criticized as “hate couture” by a conservative blogger.  Michelle Malkin, a right-wing pundit for Fox News...

The Starbucks/Wal-Mart Divide in the 2008 Democratic Primary Election

Wal-Mart customers may be after the tested products and 2-for-1 deals, but for Starbucks customers who cough up $4.50 each morning, it’s all about the Change. Political pundits have dubbed Barack Obama the champion of the upwardly-mobile, professional Starbucks customer, and Hillary Clinton the working class hero of the blue collar, less-educated Wal-Mart shopper. For Charlie Cook of National Journal Magazine...
