It' time to Spread the Word to End the Word, and make people stop and think about their hurtful and disparaging use of the word retard.

Most people dont think of this word as hate speech, but thats exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and friends. Using "retard" as a term of derision is just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.

The Spread the Word to End the Word campaign will raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the R-word and encourage people to pledge to stop using it.

Make your pledge today at http://www.r-word.org

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S REMARK ABOUT SPECIAL OLYMPICS

President Obama recently made a remark about his bad bowling being, "like the Special Olympics or something" on last Thursday (March 19, 2009) night’s Jay Leno show.

Go to the following link to hear what the Chairman of Special Olympics, Mr. Tim Shriver, had to say about it on ABC News:

This is a shout out to everyone who wants to stimulate change and make a positive difference in their lives, communities and the world! Special Olympics Inc. is embarking upon a great mission to raise awareness and encourage people all over the world not to use the "R-word," Retard. We here Special Olympics have taken a stand against the use of the word in any context as well as thousands of people of varying ages and backgrounds across the globe.

Many years ago, Mental Retardation was a term used by health professionals to diagnose people with significant intellectual impairment. Today, the "R-word" is commonly used by society to imply that someone or something is stupid. For example, you might hear someone say, "That's retarded," or "You're acting like such a retard." But we want YOU to know that even when the "R-word" is not being said to harm someone with a disability, no matter what, it is hurtful.

On 31 March 2009, young people across the country will be taking part in Special Olympics' "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign and leading local efforts to raise awareness and collect pledges on www.r-word.org from their peers and communities to vow not to use the "R-word."

So be apart of the change on that special day and everyday to leave a lasting impression with all of your friends and family, "Spread the Word to End the Word."
