Answering Economic Issues Nationwide

The slowing economy is a current problem for sales and creates bad signs for the future. In SouthCarolina, back-to-school sales are at record lows, which is the least of the problems for a state already suffering with funding for education.

Parents, local government and schools are cutting back on funding for education. Neither presidential candidate has a concrete plan for this ever-persistent problem in South Carolina. Falling sales in South Carolina not only proved for low back-to-school sales but will ultimately cause low holiday sales. Plummeting sales in South Carolina and all over the nation will only weaken the already suffering economy.

South Carolina's Natives

The stage was set for history to be made, but instead the day ended before it even began. It was to be the first event of its kind in South Carolina, a meeting to address the needs of local Native Americans. The meeting, however, never happened.             At one time the state’s Native American population thrived. Now the population is dwindling and so is the minority group’s overall well-being. The Commission for Minority Affairs is trying to change the pattern of neglecting Native American needs. This past Saturday was supposed to be step one in the process of making a change. By mid-day however the event’s parking lot housed just three cars. Instead of conversation and tones of hope, an overwhelming silence filled the air. While no one knows for sure how many Native Americans still live in South Carolina, more than 13-thousand people identified themselves as Native American. Social...

The healthcare system as it stands allows insurance companies a lot of freedom to decide to deny payment for medical procedures.

Statewide Voter Turn Out
Posted  on July 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

The number of South Carolina voters who turned out for presidential primaries made history and nationwide news in January. June’s statewide voter turnout for the local primary had results that were—to put it nicely-- less than desirable. At some polls, less than a quarter of registered democratic voters turned out for statewide primary elections. In some of the following run-off elections, only about four hundred of the state’s registered voters participated. Republican voter turn-out remained consistent statewide. For Democratic candidates however, there was not much good news. Even major endorsements of extremely influential Democrats with long party histories failed to bring local voters out on election day. In fact, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and the Rev. Jesse Jackson had active roles in state elections. Candidates supported by Clyburn and Jackson were forced into a run-off election. IT wasn’t because the race was tight. They...

Black Voters, Green Issues

Going green is the newest fad to hit America. With focus on energy consumption and the rising price of commodities, environmental concerns have Americans focused on alternatives to the norm.  But is the green trend universal? One group that may not be truly invested is black America.  In Charleston, South Carolina black people have greater concerns. After years of thriving in downtown along the Cooper River, hundreds of black families were told that a toxic water sewage problem couldn’t be fixed and they had to move. Where would they go? Most couldn’t afford to buy another home in downtown Charleston and the only option was North Charleston.  Today North Charleston is overflowing with displaced families who are struggling to afford groceries and transportation for their children and themselves, while keeping jobs that barely cover the expense of raising a family. Hybrid cars are not an...
