Calling Foul |

Send in the referee. It’s the bottom of the ninth inning and both sides are calling foul.
On the left, there are calls to protect voting rights and prevent fraud. The threat is so serious that Justice Department personnel will closely monitor Election Day voting in several counties in South Carolina. Observers will be in Dorchester and Georgetown counties in South Carolina. The Justice Department is not releasing specific reasons for interest in those counties.
They have, however, been subject to voter intimidation in the past. Recently, in neighboring North Carolina a county polling place allowed a casket with an anti-Barack Obama sticker that read “O’ No!” The NAACP along with state Democratic Representatives are going to great lengths to make sure that same intimidation does not make its way to South Carolina polls on Election Day.

Stereotypes and myths about religion have become a major component of politics in the 2008 presidential elections. Rumors about his being a Muslim and not a Christian have plagued the Obama campaign since its beginning.
Just like rumors swirled in 2000 that John McCain had fathered a black child, rumors that question Obama’s faith are not completely unfounded. McCain’s youngest daughter does have a dark complexion, she was adopted from Bangladesh. Obama’s step-father was a Muslim. Obama, himself, has never been a Muslim. He did, however, attend both Muslim and Christian schools as an adolescent.

In the final weeks of voter registration before South Carolina’s October 4th deadline, the state saw a drastic change in traditional voter registration patterns. Particularly, the number of registered minority (Hispanics and African Americans) voters has spiked significantly.
To put the situation in perspective, black South Carolinians registered at nearly double the rate of white South Carolinians. Those newly-registered, first time voters are predominately Democratic Obama supporters. Constant number crunching by both the Obama and McCain campaigns indicate that even with all the newly registered voters, McCain is still projected to win South Carolina’s traditionally Conservative general election come November 4th.

There are less than fifty days until the 2008 Presidential elections, but don't fret just yet. There's still plenty of time to make your vote count by registering. Luckily for you there are many options when it comes to registering. This includes some that don't even require you to leave your bedroom.
In South Carolina the deadline to register for the 2008 elections is Saturday, October 4. That is less than twenty days from now. If you're reading this, then you're probably on a computer. This means that in just minutes, an unregistered voter can register online. Here at www.think.mtv.com there are several links to register. Other options for registering online include www.rockthevote.com, www.declareyourself.com, and www.scvotes.org is designed specifically to register and inform voters in South Carolina.

We know that in South Carolina's Democratic Primary, Barack Obama had a landslide victory over Hillary Clinton. Those Obama supporters must be more than satisfied with the now officially- named nominee, but what about those Hillary supporters?
Enter C.E. Huffman, angry black man. He's a 26-year-old, young professional. Before John McCain spoke his first word at the Republican Convention, he had already gained the support of Huffman. A Facebook profile picture once shown a smiling Hillary Clinton, now replaced with an "African Americans for McCain" campaign sign.

The slowing economy is a current problem for sales and creates bad signs for the future. In SouthCarolina, back-to-school sales are at record lows, which is the least of the problems for a state already suffering with funding for education.
Parents, local government and schools are cutting back on funding for education. Neither presidential candidate has a concrete plan for this ever-persistent problem in South Carolina. Falling sales in South Carolina not only proved for low back-to-school sales but will ultimately cause low holiday sales. Plummeting sales in South Carolina and all over the nation will only weaken the already suffering economy.
