National Volunteer Week 2009 (April 19-25) just came to an end and proved to be a success. The theme this year, “Celebrating People In Action”, honored the individuals who have dedicated themselves to take action and solve problems within their communities. Events for this week included:

• Extra Mile Induction Ceremony: Held at the Grand Hyatt, in Washington, D.C. Honored five Extra Mile inductees.
• Capitol Hill Reception: Held at Russell Senate Building, in Washington, D.C.  Celebrated volunteers across the nation and honored Sen. Orrin Hatch and Sen. Ted Kennedy for their dedication put towards the Serve America Act.

Two national days of service were also celebrated during this week: Earth Day (April 22) and Global Youth Service Day (April 24-26).  The environment and service were recognized as essential to the development of the next generation of youth.
