"“It’s amazing to come home when you see people living in poverty. On one hand you’re thinking, my celebrity life is so surreal, but it’s my work and it helps me bring awareness…”" - Scarlett Johannson
Background
Scarlett Johansson has a strong hold on social issues for a 23 year old. She is a member of OXFAM, an organization working to eliminate poverty and find peace within those communities. The young starlett traded Oscar gold for a heart of gold when she decided to skip the Oscars and go to India and Sri Lanka after the tsunami attack to help those in need. Johansson also went to New Orleans to help aid Hurricane Katrina victims by dishing out food from USA HARVEST. Poverty and hunger remain one of Johansson’s principal concerns as she has aligned herself with organizations including Make Poverty History and the ONE Campaign.  Politics are another one of Johansson’s prime issue areas, as she has been active in elections since 2004. She has spoken out through the media and at universities around the country to endorse her choice politicians, but mostly to mobilize young voters. Most recently Johansson lent her support and appears in Will.i.am’s “Yes We Can” song for the 2008 presidential election. The bombshell is on course to become a force in the fight against world poverty and for exercising democratic process.
