Save A Vet was founded by three combat veteran Marines, with a combined 9 deployments to Iraq, 3 purple hearts, a Bronze Star and numerous other combat awards, who are determined to change the way PTSD is treated in this country. The V.A. is a wonderful organization, but cannot handle the ever-growing amount of veterans returning with PTSD related problems. Of the 300,000 OIF/OEF veterans in the VA system, over half have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, and over 68,000 specifically with PTSD. This is not including the more than 600,000 backlogged claims in the system. The purpose of Save A Vet is to raise money in an effort to build a new type of PTSD treatment facility. PTSD today is primarily treated through the use of Anti-depressants and other medications. This has resulted in a large number of young combat veterans being heavily overmedicated by their early twenties, with seemingly no end in sight. Or, If the medication doesn't work,
no alternatives. Our ultimate goal is to build a new facility for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that is focused not on medication, but holistic therapy and group therapy using members of each veteran’s own unit as a support system. Unlike most options available to vets today, this facility would not be based solely on drugs and impersonal broad therapy methods. Rather, patients will be spending time in a relaxing environment, with treatment focusing on a unique mixture of eastern and western therapies. We plan to treat small units at a time, allowing our veterans to go through the healing process with the same men they served with in combat. The camaraderie formed in battle is a powerful tool to help these brave combat veterans heal psychologically and regain a sense of their former selves. We greatly appreciate any and all help with this intensely personal cause that truly affects all of us in one way or another.
Save A Vet was started and funded solely by the disability payments of the Marines who founded the organization.
