Why I’m Here

I'm here to tell some of the stories of people and politics in Michigan during 2008.  The sights, sounds, soul and funk of the state will provide the back drop.

Michigan’s struggling economy, diverse population and importance in both foreign policy and homeland security issues ensure that the state will be a critical battleground during the 2008 elections.

The Wolverine State's largest population center, Detroit, is a majority African-American city, and is a Democratic Party stronghold. Much of the rest of the state is rural and conservative. This balance of power means the party that is able to mobilize its base most effectively will win the state.

The biggest issue in Michigan is its economy, which is among the worst in the nation. With two international border crossings and the largest Middle Eastern population outside the Middle East, U.S. foreign policy, immigration and homeland security issues are also extremely important to the region.

Blog post: Arrested (part 1)

The credentials around my neck said I should be watching John McCain accept his presidential nomination from the floor of the Xcel Energy Center, not from the curb of the Marion Street Bridge. But I sat there, staring at McCain’s head on some jumbotron plastered on a building half a mile down the St. Paul Skyline. McCain mouthed words I couldn’t hear...

Published by MTV News

One aspect of the Republican National Convention that was largely obscured by Sarah Palin’s star turn was the number of protests and arrests that took place this week: More than 800 people were arrested during demonstrations that veered between peaceful and violent. MTV Street Teamer Charles Berens...

Indulge me for a moment, if you will. For the next few seconds, I’d like to play a little word association game with you, the reader. Just say out loud the first thing that pops into your head as you read the next few words. Just say them to yourselves, if you’d like to not disturb your neighbors (or if you don’t want to convince nearby strangers that...
