As our troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan witness the horrific realities of war, depression and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) set in. What is the military doing to help our brave soldiers cope?  This is a conversation with a soldier's family who is currently coping with their son's death and what needs to be done to improve the military's mental health services.

State Budget in Crisis

The Nevada budget has become a hot talking point at the office water cooler in recent days. Sorry to report, the news isn't good. Over the past year, the budget seems to have dropped drastically with no solutions in sight. Granted , the economy isn't the best nationally or locally, and tourism, Las Vegas' number one industry, is seeing a decline.   So with all of these symptoms contributing to Nevada's economy cold, Governor Gibbons is beginning to look for the cure.

Six months of ups, beginning with Clinton and Obama emerging as front runners, and downs, ranging from speeches of mistaken sniper fire to continual controversial preacher comments; the light at the end of this primary season's tunnel is beginning to shine.  With Montana and South Dakota wrapping up the last of the contests last Wednesday, it appears that superdelegates will play an important role of electing the next Democratic nominee.  On Wednesday, Democrats across the country stood with superdelegates and supported Barack Obama as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Dina Titus announced on Tuesday that she will be making a run for Congress, representing District 3. Dina Titus has served as State Senator for 20 years, and had an unsuccessful run for the gubernatorial position last year. She will be running in Nevada Congressional District 3, a very interesting spot of Nevada as it combines both urban and rural values. Likely to win the Democratic part of District 3, she will need to reach out to conservative, rural Nevadans if she hopes to win this election against incumbent Jon Porter.  If you recall, I had an interview with Dina Titus discussing Nevada as a caucus state versus a primary state. To keep up to date with her campaign for Congress, go towww.dinatitus.com.

Your Pride is Showing

"Your Pride is Showing" was the colorful theme of this year's Las Vegas 25th Annual Gay Pride Week.   From April 29th through May 4th, the gay community held various events from youth pageants, pride parades, and a day-long festival to sum up the week.  All events spotlighted various characteristics of the gay community, and also raised awareness and money for numerous programs that cater to the gay community.  It was a fun, exhausting, yet rewarding week as I ventured into the Vegas gay culture and met the colorful people of the community.

Aid for Nevada

When I think of my life, rarely do I think of the events and memories that surround me.  Of course I think of the trips to Disneyland and the beach, times of high school, relationships, and what my future holds.  Beyond those general memories, I try to think of how I helped others.  To me, there is no little act of kindness.  An act may seem little to you, but might make an immense difference to another.  I always do my best to care for those in need.  One way I help those living with HIV/AIDS is to walk.

What's Worse Than a Paper Cut?

The word "budget" has been thrown around the Nevada area lately, and it isn't good news.  But rarely is the news ever good when the word "budget" plagues it.  Jim Gibbons, the Republican Governor of Nevada, started his term by promising citizens low taxes and no tax hikes.  Now, with an estimated $900 million dollar short fall in the budget by 2009, what will he cut next?  Unfortunately, K-12 education as well as university and college spending had already been cut earlier this year in January, and it looks like it is getting hit again.
