Teen actress Demi Lovato used social mini-blogging site Twitter to call on U.S. education chiefs to take urgent action against school bullies in a bid to curb teen suicides last week.

Her comments came after reading a story about an 11-year-old boy Jaheem Herrera who took his own life after being bullied at school in Atlanta last week.

“THIS is what verbal harassment can cause,“ she wrote in an impassioned plea. “Something HAS to be done. It honestly amazes me how schools refuse to take action in verbal abuse… they SAY they do, but this [is] what ends up happening. So, so sad.”

She went on to talk about her own experiences with bullying at school, experiences that eventually led to her being home-schooled.

Singer Rihanna is to help a sick young girl find a bone marrow donor.

Jasmina Anna Anema is a five year old girl from New York City who suffers from Leukaemia the often fatal cancer of the blood. Without a donor, Jasmina will die.

“When I saw the video of Jasmina it broke my heart,“ Rihanna told PEOPLE. “It is so unfair that for a black patient it’s so much harder to find a bone marrow match. Jasmina has acute leukemia and she needs a bone marrow transplant to live.

“Leukemia is the most common disease children in the U.S. die of and we need to change that. I urge everyone to sign up as a bone marrow donor with DKMS. If we have more donors, we can save more children like Jasmina.”

Actor Josh Hartnett plans to go to Africa with Dramatic Needs to give a new kind of voice to underprivileged children.

Unlike most charities which supply clothing, food and shelter, Dramatic Needs wants to give the children of South Africa a creative outlet and voice through art. By sending UK-based actors, musicians and artists to teach workshops in various art forms, the charity believes that children will be “better able to cope with poverty, malnutrition and disease.”
