If you want to lead the nation...should you worry about assassination? |

The one issue that media does not do a very good job of covering this election is the possibility that presidential nominee, Senator Barack Obama, faces a heightened risk of assassination. Perhaps if the subject is ignored, journalists and American citizens feel that this very present possibility will not manifest itself. Or, no one wants to deal with the stickiness of prejudice, racial segregation, slavery and the racial divide all present at some point in our country, either past or present. Either way, skirting this issue is wrong. Not only do people whisper quietly about this horrific possibility, but it is a real fear for many Illinoisans.

With the presidential election just weeks away, the political spotlight is shining bright on the state of Illinois and its residents. With a reputation for breeding corrupt politicians and a not so stellar political track record (does anyone remember Operation Greylord in the 1980s?); Illinois leaves a lot to be desired in the political arena. In the past months, we have dealt with Reverend Wright's disassociation with Senator Obama after his sermons were deemed too racially charged, Tony Rezko (a bigwig political fundraiser) being found guilty and this week Senator McCain calling Senator Obama a liar and stating, "His [Obama] campaign had to return $33,000 in illegal foreign funds from Palestinian donors." Here is a laundry list of political pitfalls that Illinois is privy to:

Andy Cobb
Age:less
Job: Actor/writer/director
Hometown: Chicago
Why did you attend the DNC? I was doing shows with Second City, a sketch comedy theater that specializes in social and political satire. We were performing for parties for **** Durbin and Rahm Emanuel, plus an event for DNC fundraisers. I'm also the director of a web-based satire group called The Public Service Administration (www.publicserviceadministration.com), and it was a chance to meet with fellow activists, directors, and people who are as interested in politics as we are making fun of it. It was tons of fun.
What was Second City's role at the DNC?...

Take a quick drive around Chicago neighborhoods and suburbs and it is visually clear how dominant racial segregation still is in 2008. With flocks of 20-year-olds and young professionals flocking to bucolic Lincoln Park, it is often missed that the color line is still very distinct in this urban area. Often, when the late twenty somethings move out of Lincoln Park and embark on their 2008 version of white flight to the suburbs, the thought of segregation never enters one’s mind.

Let’s make no mistake, our country is all about finding cures for diseases like cancer, AIDS, Parkinson’s, etc. But, what if I told you the biggest war on germs—microbes that can cause the common cold or stomach flu—should be taking place in your home? Sure we have bigger problems on our plate, but other things are lurking on those plates you are eating off of. These household germs are a big deal, not a microscopic one! Charles Gerba, an environmental microbiologist at the University of Arizona who has studied germ’s for more than 30 years told reporters last Wednesday, “Anytime you take a chance on getting ill (from exposure to pathogens), you have a chance of getting really sick.”

"If we are to have peace on earth...our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develope a world perspective. No individual can live alone, no nation can live alone, and as long as we try, the more we are going to have war in this world. We must either learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we are all going to perish together as fools."

Wednesday night, I went to the premiere of Dark Knight at Navy Pier’s IMAX theatre. Yes, it was surreal to see Sir Michael Caine, Bill Kurtis and Christopher Nolan in person—but it was a bittersweet experience. I will give you one guess why…….if you are thinking because the movie’s main star—Heath Ledger—is deceased, you are on the right track. Needless to say, the experience was downright eerie for me because it touched on a tragedy that my heart is still sore over in my personal life—the death of my eldest brother on Thanksgiving Day 2004.
Legendary journalist, Bill Kurtis, emceed the premiere
