It’s a concept that best sums up the motivation for fulfilling the duty of a Casualty Assistance Officer.   Providing support to those who have lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan is no easy task. But it is a job of primary importance within the military.   For Lt. Colonel David Ellis and Sgt. Mike Espinda it was also a life changing experience.

Version 1.0

So I realize that not everyone knows a whole lot about the great state of Indiana! In turn, I have decided to create Hoosier Nation, a blog that I hope will enlighten everyone about the issues facing Hoosiers. Here is the first edition.

A Place of Service

Indiana is a state where tradition is a big deal. Hoosier basketball and “heartland rock” are about as inescable as your local Starbucks franchises.  In fact, the average resident probably thinks that Bobby Knight is the NCAA’s most mild mannered coach and that John Mellencamp is America’s only epic rock star. But one Hoosier tradition that runs especially deep is that of military service. Indiana has the largest deployment of national guardsmen currently serving in theMiddle East.In total, 4,133 National Guardsmen serve in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Indiana Defines Pornography

Attempting to fully define material of a sexual nature may seem like a complicated task. But Indiana's State legislature has done  just that with House Bill 1042. The new law which takes effect in July requires bookstores, music stores, and other businesses displaying material unsuitable for minors to register with the state and pay a $250 fine.

The law attempts to help neighborhood groups keep adult stores out of shopping centers frequented by minors. But the bill's broad language has forced almost every bookstore in the state to consider registering as a seller of "sexually explicit material."

Oh, what a night!   Talk about a close race. Hoosiers kept the entire nation tuning in late to see whether Hillary Clinton could hold on to the slimmest of leads. I spent the evening at Senator Clinton’s victory party in downtown Indy mingling with her supporters and members of the press as the returns came in.   To be honest it was a pretty mellow gathering for a victory party. The night got off to a slow start when the networks called North Carolina for Senator Obama right when the polls closed.   Early returns showed Clinton with a sizable lead in Indiana but as the evening wore on it became clear that Obama was gaining. As Senator Clinton’s lead dwindled to about 4 percentage points it began to look like everyone was in for a long haul.   Outside of the main room I managed to catch Senator Obama’s victory speech in Raleigh, North Carolina where he congratulated Senator Clinton on her “apparent” victory in...

In a state where basketball is a practiced religion it seems that politics has taken center stage for one day at least. Hoosier memorabilia has been swept aside to make room for Hillary yard signs and “yes we can” buttons. Figures like Larry Bird and Reggie Miller have been temporarily replaced by two dueling Senators from New York and Illinois. Hoosier Nation is ready for its close up.   “Excited” is the word I hear most often from voters. People are excited that Indiana will finally play an important role in the nominating process. They are also excited to see the campaigns and their repetitive 30 second commercials head elsewhere.   Having spent the past few days talking to Hoosiers it seems to me that younger voters and senior citizens are the most enthusiastic. College students are ready to finally have their votes count. Most have enjoyed the campus rallies hosted by Obama and Clinton. Many Indiana University students have ...

Polling stations are preparing for a record setting turnout in today’s presidential primary in Indiana. Both campaigns continue to vie for votes at a feverish pace in a contest that will play a key role in determining the eventual Democratic nominee.

Following a crucial win in Pennsylvania Senator Hillary Clinton is looking to further her momentum by winning a state often described as Senator Barack Obama’s “second home”. Meanwhile, a win in Indiana coupled with a victory in North Carolina could give the Illinois Senator the knockout punch his campaign so desperately seeks.

“So what is a caucus?”

I found myself trying to answer this question a lot in the days leading up to the Iowa caucuses. The whole concept can be pretty hard to explain to an American voter let alone a foreigner. Often, my explanations were met with blanks stares or questioning glances. To be honest I managed to confuse myself at times.

You might be wondering what I was attempting to accomplish by explaining Iowa’s old-school election rules to people who won’t even be able to vote when November finally rolls around. No, I wasn’t circumnavigating the globe trying to have a sit down with Osama Bin Laden. But I was studying abroad at the University of Oxford in Great Britain.
