The Heart of America unveiled fourteen school library makeovers in 2008! As part of these makeovers, school libraries in areas of high need received a complete transformation, including thousands of new books, technology, paint, lighting, customized wall art murals and reading corners. Thousands of students, school staff, community members and volunteers attended, and every student walked away with five new books to add to their own at-home reading collections.
Heart of America engages youth volunteers throughout the country in service through book drives and participation in national READesign Library Makeover Projects. Heart of America also presents two national awards for service: the Christopher Reeve Award and the Gee Whiz Kid Award. These programs seek to honor youth who serve as role models, who provide hope and inspiration, and who represent the best of their communties.
