We Can Change Our Schools:
There are more than 95,000 public schools and 34,000 private and independent schools in the U.S. Schools must be active participants in global efforts to conserve resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and prepare us to think and act in new and creative ways. No individual school or subset of schools can solve this problem alone. We must work together now to preserve our planet.
Membership:
A school can become a GSA member by signing the Green Schools Climate Commitment at one of the following levels: 1) Climate Champion: Reduce my school’s carbon footprint by at least 30% within 5 years, and achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2020; or 2) Climate Steward: Calculate my school’s carbon footprint by establishing an energy and carbon emissions baseline, and achieve carbon reductions over time. It encourages schools to set their own goals and timeframe, as appropriate to their individual constraints. Some schools have asked if there is a financial or legal commitment to signing. The answer is “No!” The GSA is a commitment of environmental leadership.
“Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. However, it is this generation who must act now to ensure that the problems our children face as adults are not insurmountable.”
