George Clooney is a force on and off screen as his constant achievements in politics, environmentalism, and humanitarian efforts are great. Clooney is clearly an environmentalist as he was one of the first to own an electric Tango sports car, and has since bought another from Tesla Motors. When it comes to politics, Clooney is a self-proclaimed liberal who, with a father for a politician, is always ready to speak up and out about the political climate of the United States. In the 2008 election he has been a supporter for the Barack Obama presidential campaign. Poverty and disease are important issues to Clooney as well, as he supports organizations that are committed to research and funds to remedy HIV/AIDS (such as the ONE Campaign) and impoverished nations, and sits on the board of trustees for United Way of America. The actor-activist was even made a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2008. Clooney is most active in trying to find a solution to the Darfur conflict. He has traveled and worked with the United Nations in Chad, Egypt, and China to speak out on the genocide in Sudan. Clooney was behind the efforts of Darfur Now, along with Don Cheadle, to highlight and encourage the public to step up and aid in the efforts to stop the violence in Darfur. Cheadle and Clooney have worked together on other projects including the Ante Up For Africa charity poker fundraisers and the founding of the Not On Our Watch project. The two were honored together in Rome by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in 2007 with the Summit Peace Award for their efforts. Clooney has created personal journals and documentaries including the A Journey to Darfur documentary that premiered on the American Life TV Network, and appeared on shows such as Oprah to further get the word out. With more than ten organizations he is part of, Clooney is one of the many artists who will continue to strive for peace and justice on the world’s behalf.
