"DC's Street Team reporter, Erica Anderson, tracks young voter symptoms in different corners of the city. From a DNC delegate to local canvassers -- Erica finds out what makes them tick."
This week, I did a report on the youth vote.
From a research analyst with CIRCLE, to a young DC delegate and them some environmental canvassers, I asked questions and listened to Street Side opinions about the election in November.
As a result of my questions, came these faces, ideas and reasons for their civic engagement.
Here is why they think the youth vote is more than just a trendy dish the media served up -- but a movement that mirrors the message of improvement for our democratic process.

On any given day at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, a face-off will happen. Whether it's from within the house walls or on the blacktop where tourists and activists gather, belief systems are tested, tourists sometimes troubled and locals carry out many missions.
Last weekend, I caught up with a few people picketing at the White House. The picket was organized by the Campaigns Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII) and calls into question President Bush’s intentions towards Iran.
In a New Yorker article by investigative reporter, Seymour M. Hersh, “Preparing the Battlefield,” sources confirmed the White House asked for, and received, $400 million for a major escalation of covert operations against Iran.

On Saturday afternoon I went, I saw, I conquered. I gathered too. At the Capitol Hip Hop Soul Fest in Northeast (NE), I gathered new friends, flyers and flavor. Most of all, I found a community celebration with the words – well, raps, spins, graffiti and break dancing, or -- Hip Hop -- all over it.
I opted for a cab to Marvin Gaye Park. The driver gave me an over share of all the times his cab had been robbed in that neighborhood. Still, in some perplexing way, he said it with such a light heart that it didn’t scare me.

"I don't want DC Voting Rights," Margaret said.
The sound of three voices chimed in. Almost simultaneously, they asked "Why?"
Margaret has lived in DC for over six years. A transplant from Missouri, she did her undergrad at George Washington University and works in the non-profit world. Her career is driven by her ideas on economic policy and she aligns herself with the libertarian party. When it comes to this issue, she falls on the right side.
"We are not a state," she said, as if aware that the counter argument would soon fill the room from her close friends. "You choose to live here. You can choose to live in Maryland or Virginia."

“We like to chill every day out here every day, you know what I’m saying, don’t bother nobody and don’t let nobody bother us.” I was glad I was not considered a bother.
It was Monday afternoon on a humid summer day. Two blocks from my apartment in Northwest D.C. was a string of public housing buildings. It was there I met Jamal, Harry and Stephan.
Jamal is 22 years old. He is African American, lives in D.C., and is | |
