“Giving Back” is a phrase that Denzel Washington not only uses, but lives out. As a child he was an active member of the Mount Vernon, NY Boys and Girls Club and remains a major advocate of the organization to date, as he sits on the Board of Governors. He has done a number of PSAs and fundraisers on the Clubs’ behalf, and even helped to write the Hand to Guide Me book with other celebrity peers about the role of mentors in their lives, created in honor of the Boys and Girls Club centennial anniversary. Denzel is also committed to helping children in need overseas. He is the Honorary Chair Person for the Save Africa’s Children Fund and donated $1 million in 2007. Healthcare and relief is another one of Denzel’s leading concerns. He is on the Board of Trustees of the Fisher House Foundation that houses the families of wounded soldiers who are hospitalized for treatment. Denzel’s ultimate advocacy is for children however, and he has been known to support and speak on behalf of children of color, especially those in impoverished and adverse environments. This is perhaps what motivates Denzel’s commitment to education. Along with his wife Pauletta, Denzel has contributed money to many universities and colleges throughout the country, especially historically black universities and colleges. At the Cedars Sinai Medical Center Denzel and Pauletta announced The Pauletta and Denzel Washington Family Gifted Scholars Program in Neuroscience which is offered to support and encourage students to pursue a career in neuroscience. Denzel will continue to stand as a pillar of hope to the children and families of the world.
