Mission Statement
The Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug Awareness was opened after the tragic death of Brent Shapiro in November of 2005. After a long battle with the disease of addiction, going in and out of rehabs several times, Brent finally seemed be the end of his struggle. After eighteen months of sobriety, he decided to have a few drinks and then a half a tab of ecstacy. Within minutes he began to projectile vomit, speak incoherently and could not stay conscious; yet no one called for help. No one wanted to call the paramedics for fear of getting in trouble themselves and thinking he'd be fine, they decided to just let him "sleep it off". Soon after, Brent fell into an irreversible coma due an adverse reaction to the drugs & alcohol, and was buried 2 days later, mere weeks before his 25th birthday.
The Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug Awareness is geared toward creating a greater understanding and awareness of the chronic disease of chemical dependence. By taking the first step, creating an innovative and vastly different approach to how the disease is viewed and treated, it is our mission to become a national leader in the fight against this equal opportunity disease to save lives.

The main goal of The Brent Shapiro Foundation is to bring about a new state of consciousness and awareness surrounding the real face of addiction. Just like any other disease that effects us, the disease of chemical dependence and substance abuse MUST be openly discussed and treated just like any other out there. Those effected by this chronic disease DESERVE the understanding, proper treatment, the ability to openly discuss the disorder and unlimited support just as much as a person with cancer. Like a tumor, the disease of addiction festers and grows out of control without anyone even seeing the surface. It is often dealt with by denial, disappointment, and mostly suffered in silence by all who are effected. If one person has the disease, everyone around them does too. The pain and suffering, sense of loss and helplessness is felt by not only the person addicted but by those who suffer right along side them.
Those who are currently struggling need to know that there IS help and that there ARE others out there who don't judge but commend your effort to make a change to save your life. Those who fight alongside a friend, loved one, parent, relative or even fellow neighbor or classmate, need to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. The desire to keep this 'demon in the closet' for fear of judgment and shame needs to be obliterated immediately.
With revolutionary programs and campaigns such as Sober Day USA, The Save A Life Program, What's YOUR Story PSAs and more, The Brent Shapiro Foundation is making incredible strides in the fight to save lives and bring the disease of chemical dependence out of the shadows.
Through YOU and your support, we can and will save lives. Stand up and take the first step. All that is needed is a voice.....YOUR voice.
