"“It’s not about charity, it’s about justice.” " - Bono
Background
A true “jack of all trades”, Bono stands as the only man to be nominated for anAcademy Award, Golden Globe, Grammy, andNobel Peace Prize (knighted in 2007). With his band, U2, Bono has created timeless hits, but his greatest accomplishments not only happen when he’s touring the world on his guitar, but rather while touring the world on his greater life’s mission. The first seed was planted in a 1986 interview with the Rolling Stone magazine where Bono first said he wanted to become more active in social and political causes after he was inspired by the Monty Python benefit show,The Secret Policeman's Ball. Since 1999 Bono has become dramatically driven to remedy third world issues and heavily committed to spreading AIDS awareness through the One Campaign, (RED), and many more. With U2 Bono has performed at numerous charitable concerts includingAmnesty'sConspiracy of Hopetour in 1996 with Sting, Band Aid, Live Aid, and the Live 8 project in 2005 (which Bono also helped to organize). Bono would eventually become a strong political force, moving his activism to the White House and beyond. He has met and worked with some of the most powerful politicians in the world on behalf of the AIDS and poverty crisis such as, President George W. Bush, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, and U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill. In 2002 O’Neill accompanied Bono to four countries in Africa to view the devastation. Bono proved just how deeply imbedded the concept of charity is rooted in his beliefs when he called for an increased 1% tithe of the United States national budget at the National Prayer Breakfast in 2006. Besides the launch of successful Organizations such as DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), founded in 2002 with the help of Bobby Shriver, Bono is quite possibly the most successful crossover activist, bringing his causes to the forefront of American culture with everything from magazines to clothes. His EDUN line of clothing epitomizes social awareness as the articles spread the message of humanity and justice, and all of the producing factories are ethical, promise fair wages to workers, and invest in the nations in which they are located, Africa,South America, andIndia. Shriver and Bono teamed up again to create Product Red which collaborates with companies including American Express, The Gap, Microsoft, and Giorgio Armani to create products of which a percentage of the proceeds go to theGlobal Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. In July 2007 Bono was the special guest editor of that month’s "The Africa Issue: Politics & Power" issue of Vanity Fair. There is perhaps no other man as renowned and respected in the entertainment and philanthropic community as Bono. His achievements continue to rock, move, and inspire the world.
