Sooner or later it all comes crashing down. “Sooner or Later”, N*E*R*D, 2008 Standing onstage at the University of Miami, and wearing an aqua polo and a backwards baseball cap, Pharrell Williams is an unassuming yet stylish political pundit. “Yeah, we’re paying attention to what’s going on on CNN with the f***ing bailout,” he says. Pharrell takes a moment to take a breath as many students cheer and howl. One girl who has somehow gotten on stage throws up a U hand signal while another pumps her arm like Arsenio Hall. “We’re not feeling it either. You know what happened on Wall Street, right? I’ll tell you what happened on Wall Street.” And then N*E*R*D strikes up: “Sooner or later it all comes crashing down.” ...

We see things they’ll never see. You and I are gonna live forever. “Live Forever”, Oasis, 1994 At least, sometimes it feels that way, being 22 without ever having a major medical emergency. Yet, it’s still important to have health insurance. Never knowing what might happen, it would be disastrous to be injured or get sick without having an insurance plan to cover expenses like hospitalization, surgery, and medication. ...

No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine. He’s haunted by something he cannot define. “The Distance”, Cake, 1996 The economy, it seems, is on everyone’s mind. With the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the trouble with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, the high price of gas, the changing job market, the bailout, and the bickering between McCain and Obama about Joe the Plumber, I can’t really blame anybody for thinking about a buck these days. The same goes for the competitors in the Grassroots Motorsports Magazine...

My daughter's eyes, they are two tiny seas… “The Whaler”, Thrice, 2007 75% of the Earth is covered by water. By 2025, 33% of the world population will be without safe drinking water. It’s hard for me to imagine at 22-years-old that the impact of my water usage today will impact my own children, and the children of others around the world. ...

What’s so civil about war anyway? “Civil War”, Guns N’ Roses, 1991 Walt Shellabarger is a 24-year-old sophomore at the University of Miami majoring in international studies. He is also an inactive reserve in the United States Marine Corps who served with the 3rd Battalion 4th Marines Kilo Company. Currently he receives $1,800 a month through the GI Bill, which barely covers the payments for his truck, house, and food, let alone the $34,000 price tag of attending UM. Shellabarger’s company was involved in the First Battle of Fallujah in April of 2004. The following video is his account of a firefight in which he lost friend and squad leader Daniel Amaya: ...

Mister anchor assure me That Baghdad is burning. “Testify”, Rage Against the Machine, 1999 “I don’t think the media are that important.” It’s not often that you hear someone, anyone, downplay the role of the media in anything. Criticism is often heard and even expected when it comes to media, but saying the media are entirely unimportant, especially in an election year? Scandalous, especially coming from the mouth of former MTV News Correspondent Gideon Yago. Addressing a crowd of students in the Storer Auditorium at the University of Miami, Yago asks a simple question: “How many of you use Facebook?” ...

Speeches. Concerts. Protests. Police intervention. The Republican National Convention was a bizarre mix of fanfare inside the Xcel Energy Center and fighting outside. And young people were there to give their opinion on it all. The RNC was over a week ago now, but enjoy this RNC Replay. You might learn something you didn’t know before.

If someone asked me to describe what Rage Against the Machine sound like, I would tell them they make music to start a riot to.
But contrary to that image, vocalist Zack de la Rocha told the crowd at the Target Center last night to be peaceful, and blamed the police for the violence in Minneapolis and Saint Paul the last several nights. About the police, he addressed the crowd saying, “When we leave here, let’s prove to them that we have more discipline than they do.” The crowd, which had just been shouting, “F*** you I won’t do what you tell me!” along with Zack during the end of “Killing in the Name”, the band’s set ending song, became almost completely silent.

That’s what my day yesterday felt like, at least.
In the early afternoon, I went to the Minneapolis Convention Center and caught up with the likes of Cris Carter, Dave Barry, Janet Huckabee, and Cindy McCain. At night I was tear gassed near a protest in Siant Paul. By midnight I was watching Trace Adkins rock out at a Viacom event.
At noon Visa put on an event called Financial Football, and interactiv...
