ABROAD VIEW  STUDY ABROAD WRITING CONTEST

The Abroad View Foundation hosts a Writing Contest for all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students and students who have graduated within the past year. The winner for each category will receive $150, and his or her submission will be published in the fall 2009 edition of Abroad View. All submissions entered into the contest will be eligible for further review for magazine and e-zine publication.

Annual Deadline: April 2
Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, so it is not too early to send your entry for Abroad View's 2009 Writing Contest. Entrants should not expect to be notified of a decision until after June 1, 2009.

You may send only one submission for each category, but you are welcome to send submissions to as many of the categories as you wish: Personal Journey, Inspiration, and Viewpoint. Before submitting an article to any of these categories, we strongly recommend you read the Abroad View Submissions Guidelines. For more information, go to http://www.abroadview.org/initiatives/writingcontest.htm.

I just wanted to make sure that all of your supporters were aware of the 2008 $2M HASTAC/MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition. The theme of this year's competition is participatory learning which we broadly define as using new digital media for sharing ideas or planning, designing, implementing, or just discussing ideas and goals together.

I'm sure some of your supporters have a big idea on how to use digital media to make a positive change in the world and further learning and collaboration. We want to hear your ideas! In addition to our Innovation in Participatory Learning Award, this year we have introduced a new award, our Young Innovators award, targeted to U.S. applicants aged 18-25. We want to help young innovator's get their ideas from the "garage" to implementation.

Young Innovator Awards are $5000-$30,000. Deadline is October 15, 2008.

I've posted the full rfp below, but you can also check out the full details at http://www.dmlcompetition.net.

And follow us on Twitter @ http://twitter.com/dmlComp

I hope some of you that have those ideas cooking, will consider applying!

You can email me at mandy.dailey@duke.edu with questions.

Good job guys at broad view and thank you so much for taking initiative to focus on global issues and to raise International wareness. My name is peter Nhiany of the lost boys of the Sudan and a vice president a small christain nonprifit organization. As you can read our mission statement my work as an American is to help develop educational physical structures in South Sudan which we all American should be part of it if you have heart for the Sudanese and other African people who are in dire need to have access to continuous education. I like what you guys are doing and that is exactly what we should be doing as a blessed and strong nation. Keep up with good and God will continue to bless you.

Read Bret Shugrue's Information, Please! Why young viewers are turning off broadcast news on www.abroadviewmagazine.com or go to http://journalism.nyu.edu/pubzone/livewire/commentary/information_ple/.

Here's an excerpt:
My generation is turning its collective back on traditional news broadcasts, and it’s not because we are apathetic or just read the news on the Internet for free. We are quite frankly sick of the childish way news is portrayed today. Every time I turn on my television in hopes of getting a few minutes of relevant information, I am left wondering why I didn’t just put on reality TV or a sitcom. Several thousand Americans my age have been killed in Iraq; the national debt is increasing by over a billion dollars a day; and China owns almost $400 billion dollars of the American national debt but instead we find out that Lindsey Lohan was drunk, again; Paris Hilton is still rich, spoiled and lacking in smarts; and another white girl has been kidnapped.
