If you're a media-savvy 14-16 year old interested in creating socially-conscious media to inspire civic action, apply to DOTCOM - http://dotcom.ph-int.org. PH International is now recruiting American and Caucasus teens for the program, which will provide media literacy training and give students a chance to create socially conscious media to impact communities across the U.S. and the Caucasus.

Ninety students will be selected to participate in online training and create media that fosters civic action and community involvement. Among the 90 students involved in the program, ten students from each country will be selected to participate in an advanced media education program in Vermont in the summer of 2009. All students will then travel to the Republic of Georgia for a regional media conference in Tbilisi in 2010 to showcase their media to an audience that will include the Department of State, UNICEF, media organizations and NGOs.

Brower Youth Awards Honoring Youth Leadership in conservation, Preservation and Restoration

We have now opened our 2008 application period for the Brower Youth Award! Applications for the 2008 Brower Youth Awards will be accepted until May 15, 2008. Request an application at www.broweryouthawards.org

Earth Island Institute established the Brower Youth Awards to honor founder and legendary activist David R. Brower. The Brower Youth Awards recognizing six young people in North America annually for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and environmental justice advocacy. The winners of the award receive a $3,000 cash prize, a trip to California for the award ceremony and wilderness camping trip, and ongoing access to resources and opportunities to further their work at Earth Island Institute. Young activist leaders ages 13-22 living in North America are eligible to apply.

Criteria for the Brower Youth Awards

Outstanding Youth Leadership and Project Impact
The Brower Youth Awards recognize people ages 13 to 22 living in North America who have shown outstanding leadership on a project with positive environmental and social impact.

“Outstanding leadership” means that you played the major leadership role in creating, organizing and implementing your project. We are looking for the person with the vision, motivation, and leadership skills that made the project work.

“Project impact” includes how the project benefited the environment and community in terms of measurable results (e.g. acres of wildlife habitat protected or restored, number of people engaged in social issues because of the project, numbers of children no longer exposed to toxins, etc.). The project should fall under one or more of the following categories:

:: Conservation

CONSERVATION is work to eliminate or decrease our use of natural resources and our negative impacts on ecosystems and communities. For example:

*

A project that plays a substantial role in organizing a local community to pass a public transportation initiative
*

A project that significantly reduces energy use on a school campus by requiring passive solar design and the use of efficient appliances in all school facilities.

"Conserve the golden eggs carefully. Preserve the goose or there will be no more golden eggs. If you've already damaged the goose, get going on Restoration."

~ David R. Brower

:: Preservation

PRESERVATION is work to protect ecosystems, species, indigenous cultures and other irreplaceable elements of the world's natural heritage. For example:

*

A project that secures protected nesting area for an endangered songbird
*

A project that plays a substantial role in blocking development of Native sacred sites via ongoing peaceful civil disobedience (demonstrations, street theater, marches)

:: Restoration

RESTORATION is work to re-establish the healthy functioning of ecosystems; parts of ecosystems; and human communities that manage ecosystems. For example:

*

A project that reclaims an abandoned urban lot, creates an organic garden.
*

A project that rallies a community to fight for prison reform.

Be Creative. Be Safe. Postcards From Kentuckiana Art for AIDS

Artists Wanted

Kentuckiana Art for AIDS invites artists to participate in our first annual visual AIDS - Be Creative. Be Safe. Postcards benefit. We are looking for artists to donate a 4" x 6" original work on paper for the exhibition and sale. Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media are all welcome. We are pleased to announce our host gallery is David Green / STARViN-ARTiST.

DEADLINE is postmark Saturday, November 1, 2008 (NO late entries)

Be Creative. Be Safe. Postcards is a show and sale of original, postcard-sized artworks on paper by established and emerging artists. All artworks are $75 and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The works are signed on the back and exhibited so that the artists' signatures cannot be seen. While buyers have a list of all participating artists, they don't know who created which piece until it is purchased and the signature is revealed. A collector might end up with a work by a famous artist or one they don't yet know. Either way, they walk away with a great piece of art while supporting visual AIDS of Kentuckiana Art for AIDS's important work.

If you would like to participate, please contact us for Artists Submission Forms.
kyartaids@yahoo.com

Then:

1. Create or attach your artwork on any 4"x6" heavy-weight paper (Recommended: 140lb watercolor paper or press board). Painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and mixed media are all welcome. One entry per artist
2. Sign and print name on the BACK only -- also indicate the top with an arrow.
3. Carefully package artwork. Do not wrap wet or sticky artwork. (Recommended: wrap artwork in wax paper and place between thin cardboard.)
4. Complete both submission forms.
5. Note: UNSOLD artwork will NOT be RETURNED, UNLESS a 6x9 self addressed, stamped envelope is included. Please attach proper postage for return of artwork (87¢ is suggested, unless postcard and/or packaging weights over 3 oz.) Kentuckiana Art for AIDS is not responsible for lost or damaged artwork in the mail.
6. If you need confirmation that we received your artwork, please also send a self-addressed, stamped postcard with your submission.
7. Mail your artwork, submission forms and related forms postmarked by
