Global Hunger Issue
Global hunger has reached epic proportions – reaching nearly 1 billion people – due to the convergence of higher commodity and global food prices; increased competition for products that produce energy; severe droughts and floods due to climate change; a surge in conflict and wars and a growing populations.
· One in seven people go to bed hungry each night.
· Hunger is No.1 on the list of the world’s top 10 health risks.
· 25,000 people (adults and children) die a day from hunger and related causes.
· Hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
· One child every six seconds (or 14,000) dies from hunger and related diseases every day.
· In the first years of a child’s life, underrnutrition can permanently stunt mental and physical growth – pushing down IQ levels by as much as 15 points.
