People living in rural areas of the United States are at increasing risk for
contracting HIV/AIDS. During 2001 the southern U.S. had the greatest number of people
estimated to be living with AIDS. Although the South has about one third
of the U.S. population, it accounted for40%of U.S. AIDS cases and46%
of new AIDS cases (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2002). The southern
U.S. also is accounted for about two in three people
with AIDS living outside of big cities in 2000. Women accounted for about 27% of AIDS cases living
outside big cities in the South, the highest proportion of any region of the
U.S. and in addition, about 61% of people living with AIDS outside
big cities iin the South were African American. Heterosexually
transmitted HIV infection is greater among African Americans than
whites, especially in the rural, southeastern U.S. African American adolescents living in rural areas, particularly females,
may be at greater risk for HIV infection than their counterparts liv

Okay right now I’m in the process of taking the final step of being a volunteer for the organization PICASO. I’m going in Monday morning to talk with a Miss Hardison who is the volunteer coordinator of PICASO. Hopefully in joining this organization I will not only be able to educate some others on this disease but also educate myself in some things that I may not have known about. I’m trying to come up with some fundraising ideas to do here in my town… you guys… and gals… have any suggestions?
