Reporting From The 2008 International AIDS Conference
Think MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation have selected me to cover the 2008 International AIDS Youth Summit and Conference in Mexico City and I could not be more honored. From July 31st through August 4th, I will be bringing you daily reports from the 2008 International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.
This event is one of the most important events of this year, and it is crucial that we, as young Americans, be aware of the issue of HIV/AIDS and its relevance to our daily lives.
HIV has touched my life personally- as someone very close to me was diagnosed HIV+, much of my personal experience surrounding the disease involved educating my family members, attempting to dispel their stereotypes and fears. Knowing someone who has been personally affected by the disease has changed my perspective, forcing me to become educated and informed. I share this information whenever possible, telling my friends where HIV testing is available, and why it is important that we all be tested – no matter who we sleep with. These personal acts sometimes seem insignificant, but if we can encourage each person to educate five friends about HIV, we can alter the future course of this epidemic.
As a professional, I am also constantly involved in HIV and AIDS prevention work as a staff member for Planned Parenthood. We provide testing services and referrals for patients. We provide education and information to young adults through an HIV prevention program. We partner with our local HIV/AIDS organization as often as possible. I am a certified HIV counselor, and have provided HIV counseling and testing for patients.
My hope is that by reading my blog, you will learn more about the facts surrounding HIV and AIDS, and recognize that we all have a part to play in reducing the stigma surrounding this epidemic. Check back soon for a report from the ground!
