United Nations Event featuring Peter Buffett and Akon
Posted March 19, 2009 at 12:08 PM

On March 25th, in the UN General Assembly, a first of its kind cultural evening and concert entitled “Breaking the Silence, Beating the Drum” will form the centerpiece of the 2009 International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, with a chorus of celebrities and dignitaries representing the global community collectively celebrating the resilience of the human spirit and victory over adversity.

For the commemoration, the United Nations will hold a series of events, taking the global stage, and will be epitomized by the beating of drums.  The drum - a symbolic African and universal instrument - will send the message, louder than before, to all countries, for people across the world to join in “breaking the silence, beating the drum” on the Slave Trade. These events will feature a combination of artistic expressions, including music, dance and the spoken word, performed by internationally renowned artists.

Invited to write and perform a song specifically for the event, Peter Buffett once again asked Akon to join him in collaboration, and recorded the song "Blood Into Gold." Using this global opportunity and a captive audience, Peter and Akon have re-launched their website www.istheresomethingicando.com with the help of YourCause.com, with an in-depth look at human trafficking in staggering facts and figures. The redesigned website will feature a different call to action each month, and spotlight various appropriate organizations.
