Keith, you are a great guy: perceptive, sophisticated, as well as principled. I watch your show most nights and agree with you SO often. I also believe the California Supreme Court are not idiots, and I believe gay men and lesbians have suffered unjustifiable and horrible abuse in this society.

Let's be up front, though, Keith. I am a heterosexual, and I cannot marry whomever I please. I can't marry my brother, no matter how deeply I love him, no matter how he feels about me. If my brother cures my loneliness, I will probably sleep with him, anyway, but I cannot marry him, or my father, or my first cousin. I accept that. When the California Supreme Court opened the doors this past year, it knew that Prop 8 was on the ballot, and it could have waited.

I think many proponents of Prop 8 were cowards, but I am not one of them. I'm not afraid of gay people disrupting my marriage. Marriage has been the same for thousands of years. Every one of us here today was raised in a time when the social order was predictably the heterosexual family unit. On some level, we know how that works, or at least we know what it looks like.

But what about the next generation, when heterosexual couplings may get no preference? Many confusing scenarios can evolve: Two heterosexual women living together, having affairs on the side to produce children, which they bring home to raise in their same-sex household. That's one of many...you know how creative people can be. I mean, there will be no stability, and no apparent reason for anyone to choose a man-woman version, which has been shown to work for centuries. It really WILL cheapen the marriages of everybody else if there is no standard. Marriage itself may become meaningless. This didn't make sense to the majority of Californians who voted for Prop 8, and that includes folks who voted for Obama! (Obama himself is for one man, one woman marriage.)

The benefits from civil unions should be absolutely equal to those for married couples. But California voters got it right. Sorry, Keith.
