High school journalism

Communication is an essential instinct creatures depend upon for survival and progress. Teenagers, the most misunderstood and misrepresented creatures on Earth conquer any chance of communication in order to reveal their voice to society.

An outlet for this voice such as a school newspaper would create a movement of change, especially in the environment such as my hometown. I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the most segregated and racist cities in my opinion. Milwaukee is a city familiar to crime, and I can once remember flipping through the pages of VIBE Magazine and coming across an article, where my city was referred to as “Killa Mill”. This increasingly bad reputation has become associated with my own school.

I attend Rufus King International Baccalaureate High School, which is one of the many Milwaukee Public Schools. People within my city look down upon public schools, and treat us as if we’re criminals. My school is ranked number one in the state of Wisconsin, and recently ranked no. 209 on Newsweek’s list of top high schools, but no one ever acknowledges our superior curriculum. The only press coverage my school receives is a story of a freshman boy, who was beat up by three students in front of school. Even my white friends, who attend private schools stereotype my school with ignorant questions. Is your school really ghetto? Have you ever seen someone get shot? I believe that if my school had a newspaper, students could shatter the false image of Milwaukee and its schools. We would also provide a different perspective and voice as teens growing up in the environment. A newspaper for my school doesn’t just mean reporting the daily lunch or which star player won the championship game, but it’s a medium through which a new world is revealed.
