Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Both were honored on June 11, in New York City (NYC), during The LEAGUE's First Annual National Awards & Recognition Event - along with teachers and students nationwide. The luncheon event was hosted by Queen Latifah and held at Hudson Terrace in NYC. Joining Queen Latifah were the following presenters: Senator Harris Wofford; Singer & American Idol Finalist, Melinda Doolittle; Senior VP of Marketing for Cartoon Network, Dennis Adamovich; CNN.com Live News Anchor, Nicole Lapin; Actor and President/Founder of Halley's Comet Foundation, John Amos; Director of USA Freedom Corps, Henry C. Lazano; Actor, Steven Baldwin; and The LEAGUE Director of Operations, Mickie Rinehart. "In less than one year's time, The LEAGUE has registered hundreds of schools and thousands of classrooms nationwide," says Mindy Propper, Chief Operating Officer, The LEAGUE. "To date LEAGUE students have contributed $2,683,344 in time, talent and treasure to communities across the country. While many people have contributed to our success, two in particular, Dave Barger and Kathy Agard, have really led the way." As Chairman of the Board, Mr. Barger led The LEAGUE to a successful inaugural year. Using his executive and professional experience, as well as his passion for philanthropy, Mr. Barger has generated tremendous support for The LEAGUE among business leaders and educators nationwide. Mr. Barger founded JetBlue Airways in August 1988 as President and Chief Operating Officer, and was named Chief Executive Officer in May 2007. He leads JetBlue's charge to bring humanity back to air travel and to establish JetBlue as a new standard in the airline industry for service, performance and innovation. Mr. Barger has also served as "Principal for a Day" at PS 153 in NYC for the last few years. Equally impressive are the accomplishments of LEAGUE MVP, Kathryn Agard. Prior to joining The Johnson Center, Dr. Agard served as founding executive director of Learning to Give - the curriculum division of The LEAGUE. Over a 10 year period, Dr. Agard led a team of educators in the development of the more than 1,200 lesson plans on giving, service and civic engagement for use in K-12 classrooms nationwide. Dr. Agard has over 30 years of nonprofit experience in a variety of health care and educational settings. The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, was established in 1992 as a multidisciplinary, university-wide center and has evolved to serve the ever-changing needs of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors by developing new initiatives, providing educational opportunities, and conducting research. Dr. Agard also serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Hackley Hospital where she chairs the Investigational Review Committee. | It's a Beautiful Thing The Beautiful Newark program just got a bit more beautiful thanks to a $25,000 grant from The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. The LEAGUE's Beautiful Newark program is one of 59 organizations that will benefit from $3.9 million in grants awarded by the Trustees of the Dodge Foundation. The grants were made on behalf of children who face obstacles that limit their access to educational excellence. Grants to improve teaching and learning in Newark, NJ represent almost one third of all of the Dodge Foundation's giving in education this year. The Dodge Foundation's President and CEO David Grant said, "We believe all children can accomplish greatness if provided with great opportunities." The people of The LEAGUE couldn't agree more. In fact, The LEAGUE just completed year two of its Beautiful Newark program designed to make the city a better, safer, cleaner and more beautiful place to live. On April 22, more than 42,000 students from Newark Public Schools worked together to simultaneously clean up school yards and plant 3,000 flowers and 2 million seeds. "Thanks to the generosity of the Dodge Foundation, year three promises to be our biggest and best yet," says JoAnn Hoppe, New Jersey State Director, The LEAGUE. "Like the people of the Dodge Foundation, we believe that America's youth can achieve absolutely anything when given the proper resources and support. The students of Newark certainly demonstrate that."
