Life After Iraq
Posted March 19, 2008 at 4:57 PM

I decided to join the US Marine Corps after September 11, 2001. I wanted to do my part to fight terrorism and experience combat. Another motivating factor in my decision was to gain status in my professional career after the military.

In Iraq, I was a “0352” Infantry Anti-Tank Guided Missile-man. I was a driver and a gunner in a Humvee.

I wish people saw the kids who came to cheer us during the long missions we took of handing out medical supplies and soccer balls. Here are some of the kids I saw.

Another story that needs to be told is about a little girl in Ramadi.  Our company came across an Iraqi girl with severe burns all over her body from and un-war related injury.  We took her to the hospital to have her treated the best way possible.

While in Iraq, I learned to appreciate things more. I saw first hand how others live and feel blessed to live as comfortable and free as I do. My time there also influenced the way I view people that I meet. I have a much lower tolerance for self-absorbed ignorant people who think that they are in any way better then others and/or have opinions about things not based on fact or self-experience.

I think that the next president should see that the job is completed in Iraq.

My advice for others of you out there wondering how to best show support for the troops? Learn more about current conflicts before you make a judgment about what’s going on. Talk to people in the military, research who our enemies are and why they’re fighting us.
