Must Ask Permission to Take Your Kids On Vacation

I notified the school that my family would be taking a vacation at the beginning of February. We got homework for my daughter (2nd grade) and my oldest son is in kindergarten so he didn't have any. My daughter said she couldn't find a couple of her papers when we were coming back. They missed a total of 8 days of school for this. I am now getting truacy papers and the school is taking me to court because they say my children have "unexcused" absenses.

 

How do you get an unexcused absense with a 2nd grader and kindergartener when if they are not at school we are called by the school to verify they didn't leave for school and not make it. My children are passing with good grades.

 

I talked with the principal and she notified me that i must ASK HER PERMISSION  to take my children on a vacation, not just notify the school.

 

This is straight out of Nazi Germany! The state does not own my children and I am planning for the struggle to get the handbook into a version suitable for a free country! I am contemplating homeschooling my children but this would not fix the problem and I am not one to allow anyone to be treated in this manner.

  

I would like as many ideas as I can get. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will update on the situation when I have one!

I was originally notified that we were facing truancy court. I have been notified that one more absense will get the truancy officer involved. I will keep you posted with any further updates!

After they are approved, I have posted pictures of the attendence policy that show the Permission from the principal is required to take your kids on vacation.

Contacted the principal here at Manning Elementary in Iowa. The first thing I said to her was that I was not going to ask anyone permission to take my children on vacation ever. Notification is enough so that we can get their school work to take along.

 


Her explanation as to why her permission is required is "We Believe That When Children Are At School They Learn Better".


 


I notified her that this rule was straight out of Nazi Germany and she said - I'm sorry you feel that way.


 


I then notified her that my children make good grades and she said I'm sorry you feel that way. I asked her if it is discrimination to try and prosecute parents for children with failing grades and she did not respond.


 


 I notified her that this is State ownership of my children and she said i'm sorry you feel that way. She said this has been a rule for almost 7 years. (after thought-thats about the time bush's Reichstag took place on 9/11).


 


I then advised her that I would be working to get this fixed and ended the conversation.
