Barack & Hillary Weigh In On HIV & PEPFAR
Posted April 15, 2008 at 2:43 PM

A few weeks ago we posted a piece about PEPFAR - the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief.

Over the weekend, the Democratic candidates weighed in on HIV/AIDS and PEPFAR. Here's a couple of quotes-

Hillary- “I commend President Bush for his PEPFAR [President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief] initiative. It was a very bold and important commitment, but it didn’t go far enough in opening up the door to generics and getting the costs down. And as president, I will do that.”

Obama- “My view is…that we should use whatever the best approaches are, the scientifically sound approaches are, to reduce this devastating disease around the world... And part of that, I think, should be a strong education component, and I think abstinence education is important… I also think that treatment is important… I also think that we have to do more to make antiviral drugs available to people who are in extreme poverty.”

Hey, guys! It's great that you want to improve PEPFAR. It needs improving. But what about HIV in America- where, according to the CDC, infection rates may be up to 50% higher than previously thought?

And why, even though Obama is opposed to abstinence only education, and advocates 'contraception', won't he call a condom a condom?

Well, at least the Dems know what condoms are and that they can prevent HIV- unlike John McCain.
