Universities Role in fighting Hunger and Poverty
As Shakira said in her address during the Clinton Global Alliance Meeting “You are the Architects of change”.
We have the power to unite and say out loud that it is not okay that:
· A child dies every five seconds because of hunger
· That 850 Million people around the world experience hunger
· Hunger & malnutrition kill more people per year than AIDS, Malaria, and TB combined
· It is not the lack of an abundant food supply that leads to hunger, it’s a matter distribution
· Poor families (who live on less than a dollar a day) spend over 70% of their income on food
· 17 million children are born underweight because their mothers are malnourished
College students can play a crucial role in helping meet the world’s commitment to reduce poverty and halve the people who suffer from hunger by 2015. We can:
· Spread the word
· Form student coalitions against hunger
· Promote the creation of political will against world hunger
· Use knowledge generated on college and universities campuses to do hunger outreach program (e.g. education, agricultural, economic, and technological development)
· Use the internet and other media outlets to express our voice against hunger
· Engage in peaceful protest, petition signing, and other activities to drastically reduce hunger
