Eco-arks are bio-diverse botanical preserves dedicated to the continuation of useful (food, medicine, fiber) and threatened species of plant life. They provide open space for wildlife and sustainable and renewable resources for we two leggeds. They can be created in a variety of climatic conditions where natural weather patterns and water sources are optimal for their species. I decided to finally start a group focused on the Eco-Ark Project. Its multiple purposes include raising awareness of the Eco-ark being built in the Puna Rain Forest, encouraging others to start similar projects in their own area, sharing ideas and methodologies for accomplishing these goals, spreading ideas concerning sustainable, Eco-friendly technologies and off grid community living. Spreading knowledge of organic permaculture techniques, to encourage the building of community gardens and the growing of food in publicly accessible places (Green Ribbon Project). And helping each other in restoring this pla

It is not that I do not appreciate the efforts and expense going into such a noble effort. But I do see it as falling far short of our ultimate goal if it, in the end, helps at all. Part of what worries me is the security. If they take it so seriously that they make their vault impenetrable, how will anyone retrieve the seed after such an all encompassing disaster. Another consideration might be how far will the seed need to travel, on foot or by beast of burden, to get to a climate zone where it can have a hope to survive. Perhaps the vault should also hold a fair amount of food reserves so that those who eventually retrieve it are not forced to eat the seeds immediately, to survive long enough for the first generation of plants to make more seed. This still does not take into account political interference, corruption and greed factors, or all the expense that has gone into and will continue to go into maintaining our biodiversity in such an "unnatural manner".

I am not asking to take a step backwards. What is done is done, so lets make it the best it can possibly be. But it is by no means the end of problem. Many more seed banks are needed, as well as biological preserves around the world. We need to keep living, reproducing gene pools active and viable in pockets scattered across the globe. In all but the worst case scenario, The botanical preserve will probably do more good for any specific location than a far off, frozen and buried vault of magic beans. They will also be a constant source of food and medicine while we wait for the next generation of seeds to grow.
