Good Evening All,
I find it frustrating that in this society, if you enjoy a certain kind of music (hip hop) or a particular type of clothing (urban) you are often labeled as "ghetto". What does "Ghetto" even mean??
And if that is the criteria, does that mean that the majority of our youth regardless of their nationality or social class are "ghetto" as well ? Hip hop has taken over communities across the country rich and poor and it’s obvious that the urban style of clothing has been adopted by many young and old...
As you obtain the necessary degrees that society says you should have, it seems that you are expected to stop liking the things you previously may have liked. It’s like once you obtain those degrees and/or become successful if you happen to still listen to rap music or like Jordan’s you are looked down upon and categorized as “ghetto”. Eyebrows are raised if you happen to express to others your favorite artist is still a rapper. Why? It's like you are expected to forget where you are from.
I am educated but I also happen to like rap music, I love Tupac and I love Nas! I even love Bone Thugs and Harmony. So what??? Does that make me any less educated or successful? Because I have a B.A does that mean I should stop listening to the cries of others who are still trapped whether it be physically or mentally like I once was?
What happened to freedom of expression? For the record, I do not glorify this new era of "hustler" music and shirts (etc Snowman) I think this is unfortunate. However, I do side and enjoy listening to those who rap about the other struggles that we face in our "disadvantaged" neighborhoods. How could I not???
At the end of the day that is where I COME from! Regardless of how successful I become I will never forget that or lose who I am or even have the audacity to look down at others who are still there.
Does anyone relate to this or have any thoughts??
