My name is Anthony E. Hill and I am 20 yr old City Year New York corps member, but working with City Year has catapulted me to a whole new level of volunteering. I dedicated myself to 10 months of service and so far, I regret none of it. 80% of my time is spent working with kids; helping them with their homework, what goes on in their environment, building up their self-esteem and the other 20% is doing community service. When I first started mentoring the children, I didn’t see the effects of my service, but gradually, as the months went on, I started to see the kids I was helping starting to grasp what I was teaching. I particularly work with kindergarten and it’s a blessing! By me working with them, I’ve learned how to become more patient, more focused, always keep a smile on my face because they can read your emotions well, I’ve learned different teaching methods, and I’ve learned that know matter how old you are, you’re never too old to have fun. Before City Year, I was naïve to the way to which children learn, but the teacher I work alongside with let me work directly with the kids that are below the reading and writing levels, so by the end of the year, they can be promoted to the next level. So far, I have made a huge impact in the lives of the kids I serve, if you were to go to Long Island City Queens, to P.S. 111, I’m pretty sure they would tell you I’m doing a stellar job. Whoever said that volunteering doesn’t paid, lied, it is paying off not only for me, but every child that I mentor.
