Millennium Promise: Developing a Global Partnership

This week Japan is hosting the 2008 G8 Summit, bringing together global leaders to discuss the world economy, environmental concerns, African development and other pressing world issues. Development and Africa will be a major focus of the summit with emphasis on promoting international efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) - eight globally endorsed targets for halving extreme poverty in its many forms by 2015. In addition to the G8 Summit, Japan recently hosted the Fourth Annual Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) to promote an exchange of ideas between African leaders and international development partners.

At Millennium Promise, we're also mobilizing a global network of partners for the MDGs, with the Millennium Villages project demonstrating how our generation can achieve these important goals. In May 2008, we were extremely proud to announce the launch of Millennium Promise Japan. This remarkable initiative brings together leaders from Japan's business, university, policy and civil society communities around the MDG effort. The Government of Japan also provided crucial early support to the Millennium Villages project in Africa and, at TICAD, announced plans to support Millennium Villages in four additional countries - Benin, Cameroon, Madagascar and Mozambique.

A major corporate partner in Japan is Sumitomo Chemical, one of the world's largest multinational chemical companies. This incredibly dedicated company has donated approximately 330,000 anti-malaria bed nets to the Millennium Villages, providing at least half a million people with dramatically improved protection from this devastating disease.

We also have an outstanding, innovative non profit partner in Japan. Table for Two contributes to school meal programs in developing countries using donations from the purchase of healthy meals in developed nations. The organization supports the Millennium Villages school meal programs in the Malawi, Rwanda and Uganda Millennium Villages.

Our partners in Japan provide an example of the global network we're supporting to ensure the MDGs are achieved by 2015. The G8 Summit highlights the need for international cooperation for African development and Millennium Promise is engaging governments, corporations, NGOs and the general public in this effort. Our unique ability to develop global partnerships starts with our supporters - people just like you - who have helped us spread the word about Millennium Promise and the Millennium Development Goals. By working together, our generation can end extreme poverty, hunger and preventable disease.
