What can we do?
Posted January 21, 2008 at 9:20 AM

If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.

For my second week on Street Team '08, I had the perfect video planned out. It was not too heavy, but very informative and hopefully helpful to everyone. I shot the video, I edited the video, I got ready to turn in the video, and then I heard about this:

2 face murder charges in deaths

A crushing story that, unfortunately, seems to be happening more and more in my "safe" city. It is an issue that is so important, that needs so much attention, that calls for such an extreme change, that I felt like it was worth blogging about.

And I can't complain that I will now be one week ahead on my video when I submit the one I have done for next week.

Four men, allegedly conspired together to commit robbery in the Near-Northside of Indianapolis, and ended up gunning down two young mothers and their children.

Gina Hunt, 24, and her 23-month-old son Jordan, and Andrea Yarrell, 24, and her 4-month-old daughter, Charlil lost their lives in what seems to be a robbery that went wrong.

Isn't this a sign of a much bigger problem? Issues with the economy, perhaps? In 2007, my city and my state were hit with many economic blows. Plants closing down or relocating and property taxes skyrocketing are a couple that come to mind.

I'm not sure yet what the solution is, but I am deeply troubled by the fact that I no longer feel comfortable walking around my city without pepper spray.

Some people suggest more police officers need to be on the streets, but wouldn't that just raise taxes more, creating more economic problems? Some suggest that the only way to solve this is creating more jobs, which our governor seems to be trying his best to do.

Every day on the news we hear about the stock market dropping and the slowing economy, but what does this really mean? Should I be afraid of a depression coming, or should I just write it off as they seem to have been talking about it for years? Will shopping more help the economy, or should I save my money as it slows? Is it smart to buy a house right now, or will that take every penny I have? We hear about crime, but how can we help stop it? What can we do to help save our lives if we are mugged or robbed?

Honestly, I'm not sure what the answers are today. But, I will find them, and share them with you. Next week, keep an eye out for a light-hearted but informative video that I apparently worked ahead on. But, the week after that, I will have these answers.
