VIDEO:  Casper Cares

For many women, when unplanned pregnancies occur, they are forced with a choice of whether to carry the baby to term or to have an abortion. This is one of, if not the hardest decisions a woman could make. For these women, there is CareNet. This is their story.

Pregnancy centers like this spring up all over the country and are part of the right-to-life/anti-choice movement's efforts to foment what they see as a revolution in this country to overturn Roe v. Wade and outlaw abortion in all forms. This is not a "pro-informed decision" organization. This is an organization with a specific agenda. It's best to acknowledge that and own up to it.

When Terry uses the term "life-affirming" to characterize women who come into the clinic intending to carry their pregnancies to term, she is making a very clear value judgment that implies that women who do not wish to carry their child to term are "death-affirming." And since she believes that the fetus is a child (apparently from the point of conception), she believes that abortion is murder. That is her right and I do not presume to think I might change anyone's concept of what does and does not constitute a person.

However, the bait-and-switch technique here is disingenuous and manipulative. These centers promise to give a woman the full story on her range of options, but they instead provide scare tactics instead of real science. They are not interested in giving women the opportunity to make an "informed decision." I doubt, for example, that they provide women with the full range of information on the very real dangers inherent in pregnancy. I also doubt that they deeply explore the ramifications that carrying a child to term may have for the woman's mental AND physical health.

Making a causal link from abortion to certain STIs--i.e., having an abortion will predispose you to one of those diseases--is absurd and false. Unfortunately, it's a common tactic among centers like this one.

"Crisis pregnancy centers" like this one are not interested in providing accurate medical information to women. They will summon imaginary facts and falsify information to frighten women who may be better served by ending a pregnancy than by continuing it. Unlike a clinic or health center which offers a wealth of information on birth control, abortion, pregnancy, pre-natal care, and more, these crisis centers act as if only one choice is correct. The people who run these crisis centers are motivated by ideology, not reality. And while I understand their commitment to their cause, they should be upfront about their agenda rather than masking it with pseudo-science.

Women and girls would be far better served by visiting an organization that actually does the very tough work of walking a pregnant woman through all her options, with all the nitty-gritty details out in plain site. I would check out http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/pregnancy/pregnant-now-what-4253.htm for more information.

Planned Parenthood puts abortion as the best choice and Planned Parenthood performs and thus financially benefits from performing abortions. Planned Parenthood should be upfront about its ideology and goals of eugenics that its founder the racist Nazi- Supporter Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood for. Your comment is a misguided view of Care-Net and Crisis Pregnancy Centers like it. Your perceptions of Care-Net has been shaped by Planned Parenthood propaganda at an organization is threat to Planned Parenthood, because less abortions means less profit for Planned Parenthood.
Re: SaraBenincasaNY 28 days ago
Actually, LoveFreedomPeace, while I wholeheartedly agree that Margaret Sanger was cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, the organization's goals today have nothing to do with eugenics or racism and everything to do with providing women with top-quality reproductive (and general) health care. Many Planned Parenthood health centers offer mammograms and screening for cervical and breast cancer--and some even offer men's health services (checking for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, etc.) One affiliate, based in the Midwest, recently began offering adoption services instead of just adoption referrals (and all Planned Parenthood health centers are equipped to refer an expectant mother to an adoption services agency if she wishes).

I would further argue that your perception of the economic model for Planned Parenthood health centers is incorrect. While some Planned Parenthood health centers offer abortion services, these comprise approximately 3% of all Planned Parenthood services. The bulk of their work has to do with things like well-woman visits (pap smears, breast exams, etc.) and birth control prescriptions. It's actually far more profitable for Planned Parenthood to increase its birth control services than its abortion services. Consider that while an abortion is a one-time service (generally costing anywhere from $400 - $800), dispensing birth control prescriptions is a repeat service. And while a woman who fills her prescription at Planned Parenthood may pay anywhere from $0 to $50 per month (certainly a lower one-time fee than for an abortion), she's likely to come back month after month...meaning that, in the long run, she's going to pay Planned Parenthood more money than she would have if she had had an abortion.
