Every year the Minnesota Tax Coalition holds a rally in protest of taxes and what they consider to be "wasteful" spending. As the rally began, one of the speakers asked the crowd, "How many of you took light rail to get here today?" The crowd responded with boos. Light rail is just one of the services many of the rally attendees consider to be excessive. I asked several young people why they thought it was important to attend the rally and support tax cuts. Most told me that they didn't like giving the government money for programs and services they think are superfluous. Several people also told me that Minnesota ranks fifth when it comes to states with the highest taxes. Matt Entenza, a former DFL legislator, disagrees and says that when local property taxes and special assessments are taken into account, Minnesota actually ranks 32nd in the nation.
